• Hoboken Beauty: Balayage Highlights from Ashley Branda at Rebellations

This was totally me. When I first went to Ashley, I was totally scared to try anything new. But for some reason, the first time she did my hair, I trusted her. Maybe it was because she was a “real” Hoboken Girl…born and raised, or maybe it was because she was honest and direct about what would look good and what wouldn’t. Either way, I told her to just “go for it,” and do whatever she wanted…and I absolutely loved the results — which you might remember: my ombre highlights.

Since that hair coloring sesh, I’ve been hooked on highlights, lowlights, and everything else color. Going blonde is actually on my bucket list, but maybe not til summer, because right now I’m WAY too pale for that. Anyway, Ashley recently started working at Rebellations Hair & Beauty Studio which is located at 44 Hudson Place (on the 3rd floor) - just take the elevator up!

Here are my before roots (tsk, tsk I know) that I came to her with:

Ashley recommended balayage-inspired highlights on a chestnut brown base with a bit of caramel tones mixed in (she told me this – I had no clue what she actually did) which will warm up my pale skin. I’ll take it – anything to look less pale in the coming winter months! My current highlights were quickly (and obviously) growing out, and I wanted a bit of a change.

If you’re unfamiliar with balayage, it can look something like this (a sun-kissed mix of highlights):

Well, I don’t necessarily look like that hot mama, but I did look like this:

    Me in the chair…standard

My hair came out looking great thanks to Ashley – here’s an after pic from the next day – my blowout still in tact (with a few curls):

Instagram makes the finished product look a little more reddish than it is (in real life it’s more caramelly), but you can tell that it definitely looks sunkissed – and the color and highlights do warm up my skin tone! And I love how, like the ombre, maintenance is suggested, but it’s not necessary every 6-8 weeks (since the roots showing is kinda sorta part of the style).

Ashley also suggested a deep conditioning repair treatment for my colored hair – Arrojo; I bought it right at the salon, and I’m so excited to try it! In general, besides the fact that they have Ashley at Rebellations, it is a great salon. It’s easy to get to, clean, modern, and the staff is very friendly. I was also impressed that their shampooing chairs had a massage button built in.

    Awesome massage shampoo chairs

I absolutely recommend Ashley as a hairstylist – she is my go-to color girl – besides being super down-to-earth, friendly, and fabulous…she is fantastic at what she does.

Ashley – yes I made her take this :)

    • interesting, there must be different techniques… i’ve been getting balayage in the city for so many years and i love it! but my girl never uses foils, she just paints the color on.
