Our Hoboken Girl of the Week, like many, is quite the inspiration — and is also a recent Hoboken bride!

Meet Meghan {Lavelle} Lukin, the owner of Washington General Store {and Hoboken resident}. Washington General Store is a home and gift store {more on an HG visit here}, specializing in unique products and home decor: chandeliers, candles, fine tea, holiday decorations, monogram gifts, and everything in between.

Vepo Clean

A Hoboken resident herself {and admitted last minute shopper}, Meghan created Washington General Store out of a need for more luxury gift shops in town. Leaving behind a career in luxury fashion, Meghan comes with a profound respect for quality, style, craftsmanship and a savvy business sense.

What is your favorite restaurant in Hoboken?

I’m sure everyone says this, but how do I pick just one!? La Isla, Johnny Pepperoni’s, Charritos, Margherita’s…I could go on, but those are some of the standards in my weekly rotation (as you can tell I do not cook!). Court Street has my heart for brunch. I literally dream of their Huevos Rancheros.

What is your favorite boutique in Hoboken?

Washington General Store, of course! But I also want to buy everything in Peper & Parlor, The Golden Carrot and Aaraa.

What do you love most about Hoboken?

I love that it allows you an urban lifestyle with the comfort of a small town. You can still walk to whatever it is you need, but you spot several familiar faces along the way! We still have those special spots, like Fiore’s, Sobsey’s and Leo’s that give it an old time feel. I don’t think you find that in many places anymore.

What is your favorite thing to do in Hoboken?

I run a lot with my dog, Georgia (who joins me at work every day). We love to run up the hill and through Stevens Institute and along the water. It’s a great way to start the day and always makes me realize how lucky I am to live here.

How long have you lived and/or worked in Hoboken?

I’ve lived in Hoboken for 3 years, and worked here since opening the store in May of 2014. I used to work in midtown Manhattan — the commute is much better now!

What is your favorite outdoor place to spend time in Hoboken?

I love Pier A. I’m also pretty partial to our backyard in the store. It’s one of the things I love most about Hoboken — you have all of these hidden little spots that are really unique to city life. FYI: our hidden gem of a backyard is available to rent for a private event!

What is your favorite place to workout in Hoboken?

Over the summer, I got hooked on barre classes at The Bar Method. Getting married influenced my decision to join, but I’ll definitely continue even now after the wedding!

Where do you go out with friends in Hoboken?

Let’s be honest – it’s usually to eat and/or drink. I like to bring friends to some of the restaurants off of Washington that they would probably not find themselves {Dozzinos, Cucharamama, Otto Strada}. Also love Pier 13 in the summer and Jack’s Cabin in the winter…it’s a great snowstorm bar!

What is something you think needs to come to Hoboken?

We could definitely use another sports bar or pizza place…just kidding! I don’t think another shoe store could hurt…but then again I’m not sure there could ever be enough! I also think Hoboken could use a really great seafood restaurant. I was so happy when Luke’s Lobster opened a few months ago – we need more of that!

What else should people know about you?

I love hearing feedback from customers. Sometimes people are nervous to tell a store owner what’s missing or what’s not working for them, but it’s helpful and I really do take it into consideration when buying. And on the flip side, it’s always nice to hear a great gift giving story of how much the recipient loved their gift! I’m usually at the store everyday {even if I’m not manning the counter} so come say hi!
