This was a post from 2014 {when HG was more of a personal blog — but thought it’d be fun to reshare as pretty much all are still relevant today}. xo Jen

My friend Alexandra of Glow and Joy had a fantastic post recently which listed 50 random facts about herself. I loved reading her answers so much, I thought it would be fun to follow suit for the first day of unofficial fall. Normally Hoboken Girl is dedicated to all things Hoboken, but since this started as a personal blog documenting my experiences in Hoboken {and developed into much more}, I’m making the executive decision to post this :). So here goes:

 50 Random Facts About Me

1. I am an Aquarius gone rogue … I love being independent and by myself, but I also crave companionship and spending time with others.

Hobbs Inc

2. That being said, I get a bit of anxiety and major shyness meeting new people, even though you’d probably never know it.

3. My mom was a vegetarian growing up {and still is to this day} and had me drinking almond milk and eating organic food before it was “trendy.” We used to make Whole Foods trips that were an hour from where we lived, just to get organic produce and soy cheese.

4. When I was four months old I had open heart surgery at the New York Presbyterian Hospital. I was born with Transposition of the Great Arteries, and had the Senning procedure by Dr. Gold on June 25, 1987. My heart was the size of a kidney bean when I had my {life-saving} surgery. After the surgery, the doctor came out and said to my dad, “It’s miller time!” My dad loves telling that story.

5. I showcase my best dance moves when in my living room and/or in the passenger seat of most cars.

6. When I was little, I hated having a little brother {who is 7.5 years younger than me}. Now he’s 21, and I couldn’t be happier to have a sibling like him! He’s cooler than I’ll ever be.

7. I HATE the phrase #yolo, but I try to live by it every day. Usually when shopping or planning a trip.

8. I am very sensitive, and I often take things personally when I shouldn’t, or ruminate about things people said to me {which they probably didn’t think twice about saying or think I would think about what they said after they said it}. Does that make sense? Tell me I’m not the only one 🙂

9. The area where I grew up was really rural — filled with horses and cows — but on a beautiful lake. My grandparents had a vacation home there and my parents decided to buy it and raise kids there because they weren’t a big fan of city {well, Long Island} life. Their house on the lake is my absolute happy place.

10. My favorite restaurant in Hoboken is….{I really can’t decide}. It depends on my mood, hunger, cravings, etc. Augustinos, Dino and Harry’s, Grimaldi’s, and Bin 14 are all up there. Elysian and Schnackenberg’s too. La Isla downtown 4Lyfe. #justsayin.

11. My Spotify is the most random mix ever. Enya for when I’m stuck in Lincoln Tunnel Traffic and need some zen, Backstreet Boys and ‘Nsync for joy riding with the windows down, rap for when I’m ridin’ dirty {like serious lil Wayne ‘ish}, and The Fray/Goo Goo Dolls/Andy Grammer/and the like for when I’m feeling reflective.

12. I beat my husband in the NCAA March Madness tournament every year, without fail. And he’s a former basketball coach.

13. I was by myself when I found my wedding dress. Well, my friend Amelia was with me, but she was actually working at the store in Boston where I bought it. I tried it on 2x, said “this is it,” and bought it. Easy peasy.

14. My husband and I are polar opposites — and I wouldn’t have it any other way. A few things that we bond {immensely} over: Dumb & Dumber quotes, Enrique Iglesias {Yes, Hero was our wedding song} and discovering new music, traveling, Law & Order SVU, and our love of dogs. And laughing. We laugh a lot.

15. When I go on vacation, I am that person who just wants to lay around and completely relax. My husband calls it “Vacation Jenny.” I am going, going, going 24/7 in my real life, so when I get a much needed break, I want to use it that way. I could literally sit in a hotel room and watch HBO most of the day, go out to a nice dinner, and then sit in a hot tub afterwards. My fiancé, on the other hand, is the opposite. In real life, he’s mellow, relaxed, and happy-go-lucky, and on vacation he turns into a map-yielding, vacation drill sergeant, wanting to see and do everything and anything while we’re there. He keeps me on my toes.

16. I used to drink mostly beer in college. Then I studied abroad in Rome, Italy and my wine obsession began.

17. When I was little, I was so scared of the movie E.T. that I made my mom come with me for about 2 weeks after wherever I went in the house because I was scared. Including the bathroom.

18. Some nights there is nothing I love more than some sushi {or Mamouns, Bareburger, Pita Grill…}+ Netflix. Make that most nights.

19. I don’t drink caffeinated coffee. I’m naturally like this!

20. I get anxiety when people scroll through my cell phone photos. There’s nothing incriminating or {that} inappropriate on there, but I just don’t like it.

21. I hate all organized sports, except for ping pong {and shuffle board}…which is ironic since I’m married to a former coach {whose relatives played in the NFL and NBA}. I always have lots to contribute at Thanksgiving, really.

22. I would have a really tough time narrowing down my favorite dessert for you because I. Love. Sugar. Top 3: chocolate shell cannoli, Ben & Jerry’s Phish Food Ice Cream, and anything with Reeces’ PB cups mixed in. Most likely a Dairy Queen blizzard. #noregrets

23. I am 29 and I have about 15 gray hair or more. My mom is in her 60s and has about the same amount as I do — and has never dyed her hair in her life. It’s still jet black. Why can’t I get more of her genes?!

24. Every time I look at the NYC skyline I think about how amazing the view is, and I usually take a picture.

25. When I was a freshman in college, I lived abroad in Paris for the summer — which helped me speak French better than 6 years of French class ever did.

26. I used to absolutely LOVE singing and performing in front of people. Now that I’m older I’m way more shy. You will only catch me karaoke-ing after several drinks.

27. In middle school, my singing teacher told me I had perfect pitch and made me go to an audition for the open call of The Kenny Rogers Christmas Spectactular at Radio City Music Hall. I got 3 call backs, and then got an agent and auditioned for some more Broadway shows and was cast in several national TV commercials.

28. I got my black belt in karate when I was 17. If you asked me to defend myself at this point, it would be a joke. Enter my pink mace.

29. You will never get me to go skydiving.

30. While I am totally obsessed with social media and post daily for Hoboken Girl, I like to keep my personal life relatively private.

31. Growing up, I had a yorkie named Lacey. She was the best little dog ever {a whopping 5 pounds}…until Pierre came along. But I will never forget her.

32. Sometimes I feel like animals understand me more than people do.

33. I have undiagnosed ADHD, for sure. If you look up the symptoms online, you’ll see my picture next to them.

34. My life is a constant battle of how to keep my house clean while simultaneously trying on everything I own in my closet and throwing it on the floor.

35. Losing loved ones and the fear of the unknown are the things that scare me the most about life.

36. I like to pretend like I am into yoga, but for some reason, I cannot get down with the namaste situation. I do Local Barre on the reg, but yoga requires me to be calm, cool, and collected…and I struggle with that. Working on my mindfulness, always {and usually failing}.

37. I used to work with individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia and help them find jobs as an Employment Specialist {when I worked in DC for a year} after grad school. It was a very rewarding and exhausting job.

38. I don’t know if I want to have kids. Everything seems to change when you have them, and it scares me. Life right now is pretty awesome. And I always said that I used to have 500 kids that I take care of at work as a school counselor…we’ll see 🙂

39. I used to be very self conscious about having a large scar on my chest from open heart surgery. So worried, in fact, that I made my mom buy me Mederma and I applied it every day to make the scar fade. It’s still there and visible, but I wish it hadn’t faded as much. Scars are tattoos with better stories.

40. I am still a big fan of hashtags and emojis. #ForEverything. 🙂

41. I used to hate public transportation. The only type I like is the PATH because it’s a straight shot into the city — but I still will drive into the city and pay $60 in parking fees and tolls just so that I don’t have to deal with it {or UBER, obviously}. That’s how much.

42. In high school, I won “Most Likely to Succeed” in the yearbook awards. I still don’t feel like that’s applicable. Talk to me when I’m 40.

43. When I was younger, I used to think I wasn’t very like my astrology sign, which as an Aquarius usually means you’re a free thinking and resourceful/creative. Having a blog and a photography business, I’m finally starting to realize that I actually may be more Aquarian than I think. I love my water sign…and being near water.

44. I love being in the sunshine, but I get easily sunburned and lots of freckles…so I usually spray tan and then wear lots of sunblock. And don’t get outside as much as I’d like.

45. My mom is Jewish and my dad is Catholic, so I grew up a “mutt” of sorts…only celebrating the major holidays and not belonging to organized religion. I loved it. And I don’t get offended by Jewish jokes, unless they’re about ovens. Those are never okay.

46. I’ve never realized how much my college friends and high school friends know about me, until I see them for the first time in a long time and they mention something random that only we would know, and it makes me happy. You can never replace the friends you grew up with, just add to them.

47. Giving gifts might be my favorite past time. Well not the spending money part, but thoughtfully figuring out what to get people and giving it to them is one of the best feelings in the world.

48. I love Bravo TV,  and I only watch/subscribe to cable because of that {and sometimes E! + HGTV}.

49. Boat rides {to anywhere} make me feel more alive than any other experiences. Maybe because I’m an aquarius.

50. EVERYTHING happens for a reason. Everything.
