Hoboken is loaded with great restaurants, but there are many that often fall under the radar and earn the title of a “hidden gem.” Ali Baba, located at 912 Washington Street in Hoboken, is truly one of those gems even though it’s on the main drag — serving up authentic middle eastern cuisine in the Mile Square since 1983. From the great food, to the service that makes you feel right at home, Ali Baba is a true Hoboken staple.  Read on to learn why we love it.

The Atmosphere

Ali Baba has an old-school feel, so you can enjoy authentic Middle Eastern grub without getting all dolled up. Middle Eastern-style music is usually playing throughout the restaurant, which makes your falafel taste that much better. There are plenty of tables inside and whether you’re alone, with one person, or have a large group, the staff will gladly accommodate you. Expect a crowd during the weekends, but during the week you can easily get a table. When dining in, you’ll also notice a bunch of online deliveries constantly going in and out.

The Staff

Typically, there is one waitress on staff. If you frequent Ali Baba, you’ve probably had Jackie as your waitress — she’s the sweetest, along with a cook or two the kitchen, one of them being the owner, Ibrahim. That’s right, Ibrahim isn’t a typical owner who comes in once in a while to oversee things. He does the cooking and will serve customers sometimes, too. And while some might think having a small staff is a bad thing, trust us, it isn’t. Having minimal staff who know what they’re doing makes for an intimate experience. Both Jackie and Ibrahim are also the kindest people and truly take pride in making their customers happy.

The Food

Now, on to the super important stuff. Ali Baba serves up deliciously authentic Middle Eastern fare. The falafel is amazing and the traditional gyro is what dreams are made of.

The staff is accommodating if you want to make a change to any of the dishes; whether you want a different type of salad with your platter, extra spice in your food, anything you need, really. And for dessert, they have something unique in Hoboken — honey cake. If you’ve never tried it, trust us, you need to. Ali Baba is BYOB, so you will really feel at home.

The Verdict:

Ali Baba is truly an old-school Hoboken staple that you must visit if you haven’t already. And if you’ve only ordered for delivery, we encourage you to try dining in for a wonderful experience. Ibrahim and his staff have done a wonderful job the past 30+ years in bringing authentic Middle Eastern fare to Hoboken residents in a friendly and inviting environment.
