Checking your horoscope may be daily task {we’re not judging, and in fact, totally guilty} — we rely on it to tell us about our love life, what kind of work day we’ll have, and so on. But — do you really know what any of it means? We’re bringing in our spiritual contributor, Shawn of Witchy Wisdoms, to break down Astrology for us {because other than googling a horoscope every morning, it’s still a mystery}.

For most people, their knowledge of Astrology starts and ends with their Sun sign. You know, the pickup line you get when having your favorite drink at a local bar?

“Hey baby, what’s your sign?” — they’re actually referring to your Sun sign {but it’s highly doubtful they know that, either}.

In Astrology, there are 12 Zodiac signs that are placed in a circle in the cosmos, like a pie in the sky. Depending on where the planets were at the time you were born, that will determine your Sun sign {and entire natal chart}.

The Zodiac has 12 signs, each placed into different elements:

Fire: Leo, Aries, and Sagittarius

Water: Cancer, Pisces, and Scorpio

Each of these elements describes a sign’s strengths and/or weaknesses in a general sense, with individual traits influenced by each unique sign. But things get much more intricate the more you dive in…

Without getting too complicated, there are two other aspects of your chart that are easy to find out and will tell you much more about your personality than your Sun sign alone — your Moon and your Rising/Ascendant.

Your Moon sign has to do with your inner emotions. It’s the deep tide that you feel within you, and how you process your feelings. Your moon is mysterious and underneath what you show the majority of people.

Your Ascendant or your Rising sign is the mask you wear when you first meet people. It’s how you display your first impression. It also highly influenced how you were brought up, making sense of how you were told to behave as a child.

So for example, if you’re a Leo Sun, you’re probably very extroverted and love the spotlight. You command attention and receive it wherever you go. But let’s say you are also a Libra Rising, and have the innate need to smooth things over on a first meeting before making a big splash. And finally, if you have a Scorpio Moon, you would feel quite deeply and intensely about how that meeting went. See how much more intricate that got?

Unfortunately, the only way you can find out these aspects is by looking up your natal chart. Unlike your Sun sign, which is found by following the date you were born, your Moon and Rising are determined by adding in the time and place, because it is more of an exact placement.

Luckily, it’s very easy to find out your entire natal chart. Try an online service such as cafeastrology.com to find out all of these specifics and more. It will help to understand more deeply how you respond to things, especially if you don’t always feel a strong pull to your Sun Sign.
