In 2022, Hoboken said goodbye to a long-time local staple. Big Fun Toys, a family-owned toy shop on Washington Street, closed its doors for good after a twenty-year run in the Mile Square. In its place comes a pretty far cry from the games and toys that were — according to signage outside that we noticed back in August, a tanning salon chain was slated to take over the space, with construction already underway. As of October 2024, signage was up for Beach Bum Tanning, and as of January 2025, the new tanning salon is officially open in the Mile Square. Keep reading to learn more about Beach Bum Tanning, the newest tanning salon in Hoboken at 602 Washington Street.
What to Know
In early August 2024, a member of Team HG was walking down Washington and noticed curious signage at the former Big Fun Toys space. A construction permit notice hanging in the window indicated that an interior renovation was underway to transform the commercial space into a tanning salon.

As it turns out, that commercial tanning salon is none other than Beach Bum Tanning. Patch reported the news earlier that year, and Beach Bum’s website listed a Hoboken location as “coming soon.”

Beach Bum Tanning is a salon chain with locations in New Jersey, New York, Virginia, and West Virginia. Its services include “sunbeds,” spray tans, and airbrush tans. There are custom memberships, packages, and beach pass programs, which you can learn more about here.
This is just the latest in a slew of beauty businesses — both chains and locally-owned — to arrive in the Mile Square. In 2024 alone, Skin Laundry, 4Ever Young, Glowbar, and Honey Medspa opened brick-and-mortar locations in Hoboken.
The Story of Big Fun Toys
There are few — if any at all — locations in Hoboken focused solely on toy retailing. For over 20 years, Big Fun Toys filled this void in town, with its selection of games and gimmicks as silly as the cartoonish branding on the building’s exterior.
Hoboken locals were disappointed to see the shop close in 2022. The store owner, Jenny Robertson, took to Instagram on December 29th, 2022, to say an official goodbye to the Washington Street store. “While we will miss seeing your faces every day, we are excited to announce a new, exciting shift to our family business coming in 2023.” See the full post below.

Big Fun Toys still has a location in Point Pleasant (hi, @thejerseyshoregirl_) which Jenny encouraged locals to visit back in 2022. You can follow the “down south” location on Instagram here.
