One of the best afternoon pick-me-ups is a sweet + surgery treat. Lucky for us, there are a plethora of options in Hoboken + Jersey City. One of those delicious options can be a chocolate chip cookie, which we have plenty of. Beat the midday slump by heading to one of the best spots in Hoboken or Jersey City for chocolate chip cookies — sweet, chocolatey, buttery, baked-to-perfection goodness.

Hoboken

Annie & Em’s Bakeshop | online order only

“Keep it sweet” is the message that welcomes visitors to this gluten-free bakeshop. Both savory and sweet options are available here, but our eyes are on the proverbial prize. In this case, it’s a gluten-free chocolate chip cookie that tastes just as good as the original. The shop is run by two sisters who started their businesses with a farmer’s market stand before opening the brick-and-mortar shop in Hoboken.

While the colorful macaroon selection might first catch your eye – including a maple bacon delicacy — Baking Mama’s sea salt or classic chocolate chip cookie is the REAL deal. Baking Mama was named Yelp’s best chocolate chip cookie spot in NJ.

If you live in (or anywhere near) Hoboken, then you already know Carlo’s by the famed custom cakes and television shenanigans. Because of the intricacies of the cakes, it’s easy to forget Carlos makes delicious cookies (and cannolis!), too. Head in and bring a box home in honor of the holiday — just remember to show your Hoboken ID to skip the inevitable lines.

It was worth the wait for this NYC-based chain to make its way over to Hudson County. The cookies are thick and chewy, and the chocolate chip is one of the core flavors the shop has every day, while several other flavors rotate weekly.  The shop is open Sunday-Thursday from 11AM to 10PM, and Friday and Saturday from 11AM to 11PM.

The Cookie Connect | 305 1st Street

The Cookie Connect was started by two college friends with a passion for snacks. Their idea was born in a student apartment but now has grown to have four shops throughout North Jersey. While the creative minds behind The Cookie Connect have all kinds of clever and delicious ‘remixes’ of classic recipes, we will always be fans of the classic chocolate chip cookie. But just because it’s a classic doesn’t mean it’s boring; of course, The Cookie Connect team has its own decadent twist on this quintessential cookie.

This coffee shop serves a fresh daily selection of croissants, scones, muffins, and in-house homemade cookies. It not only bakes delicious chocolate chip cookies, but it also has some fun flavors to try out. There’s a s’mores cookie, which features a giant marshmallow baked right into the center, or an aesthetically-pleasing confetti cookie.  The Hive has also been known to feature special holiday cookies.

Insomnia Cookies | 56 Newark Street

Insomnia opened its first location on this side of the Hudson in our very own Mile Square — and we couldn’t be happier. These cookies have that sought-after homemade-by-your-mom taste and come in a variety of flavors and sizes. There’s also ice cream for ice cream cookie sandwiches and milk to really pull the cookie experience together. Don’t feel like going out for cookies today? No problem. Insomnia delivers until 3AM.

Shaka Bowl | 720 Monroe Street + 110 Washington Street

This Hawaiian poké  + açai bowl haven also offers the most delicious chocolate chip cookies. Keeping in line with the store’s ethos of catering to a variety of dietary needs, the cookies here are vegan and gluten-free, so (literally) everyone can enjoy them.

Sweet | 343 Garden Street

The name says it all: Sweet is a go-to spot for all of your sugary cravings. While it is known for its custom-made cupcakes and cake selection, you can’t forget about the made-from-scratch, baked-on-the-premises cookies that will leave you wanting more. These cookies come in all different shapes, designs, and flavors. Along with your favorite cookies, pick up a cup of homemade hot chocolate, made by melting two different types of solid chocolates together. Drool.

Bang Cookies | 128 Newark Avenue

Why not get a little fancy and dress up your chocolate chip cookie with a little sea salt? Bang Cookies in JC are soft-baked, organic, natural… and giant. Visit them online and order whatever cookies you desire OR head to the brick-and-mortar at 183 Summit Avenue in the Heights or at 128 Newark Avenue downtown. However you get Bang Cookies, you can count on the fact that it bakes them for you fresh and delivers them to you the same day. And in case you’re looking for something a little outside the cookie box, you should try the s’mores cookie. You can watch a video (yes, a video) of it here for some extra convincing.

Beechwood Cafe 290 Grove Street & B18 18 Park Avenue

Sister restaurants Beechwood Cafe and B18 both have delicious coffee drinks, all-day eats, and of course, chocolate chip cookies. We like the laid-back vibes and both locations have plenty of outdoor seating, making it an easy visit with a pup.

Cocoa Bakery | 275 Grand Street + 475 Central Avenue

Front and center amongst the impressive plethora of sweets are Cocoa Bakery’s classic chocolate chip cookies. Also creating custom cakes, cupcakes, pastries, and more, this downtown JC bakeshop is owned by pastry chef Jessica Isaacs, who was previously the Head Pastry Chef at Nobu. There are gluten-free cookie options, too!

Dulce de Leche Bakery | 376 Central Avenue

This light-filled cafe in The Heights is known for its incredibly decorated cakes. But a visit to the cafe will yield a delicious breakfast or lunch, and of course, no visit to the pastry case would be complete without a chocolate chip cookie. This Argentine-run shop has a top-notch coffee menu as one would expect, so order a cafe con leche with your cookie for the ideal afternoon treat.

Milk Sugar Love Creamery & Bake Shop | 19 McWilliams Place

@milksugarlovejc

Ice cream AND cookies — yes, please. This shop (straight out of a sugar-lover’s dream) offers fresh-baked cookies, macaroons, and more on top of 12 daily organic ice cream flavors and frozen treats, too. For those looking to put a unique spin on eating cookies, opt for the best of both worlds and order The Doughboy – a handmade ice cream sandwich with two layers of chocolate chip cookie dough filled with chocolate ice cream, dipped in a chocolate shell, and sprinkles on top.

Rooted in Italian style and with a passion for baked goods, Prato prides itself on bringing a piece of Tuscany to New Jersey. For a unique spin on a chocolate chip cookie, try the handmade chocolate cantuccio which is a delicate, crispy biscuit cookie made simply with chocolate, flour, sugar, eggs, vanilla, natural flavors, and yeast. Savor your selection with freshly brewed espresso or cappuccino.

We love this low-key cafe for its fresh juices and Asian-inspired bowls. But the team also churns out a chocolate chip cookie that is worth stopping for. Guests can enjoy this treat sitting under the shade in Short Grain’s streatery, which overlooks Jersey City Hall for some people watching.
