Navigating the bar scene can be a little overwhelming without some knowledge going in. Football season is even more intense. It’s best to know which bars you plan to catch a game at beforehand because these bars reach maximum capacity early in the day. Luckily for you, we’ve rounded up the best bar spots to watch football in Hoboken — and not just any bar spots, but according to your mood and taste preferences.

For a Party Atmosphere: Wicked Wolf | 120 Sinatra Drive

Not into commercials during the games? The Wolf knows and occasionally hires a DJ to spin beats whenever there’s a break in the action. That plus a few brews on tap, and it’s pretty much a party. It’s usually packed — creating a Sunday Funday to the max.

For a Brunch Party Vibe: Madd Hatter | 221 Washington Street

Hobbs Inc

Madd Hatter has 40 TVs and is a pretty popular spot for the party crowd on Sundays in general. It’s pretty loud, and tables go quickly — so if that’s your vibe, make sure you arrive early to score a table.

For a Family-Friendly Experience: Pilsener Haus | 1422 Grand Street

If you’re into watching the games but want to bring along the fam, Pilsener is a great spot that will serve the dual purpose. There are TVs throughout the interior, and long tables with stroller-friendly options. The drink and food list is also worth a nod — make sure you order the Bavarian pretzel.

For a More Intimate Vibe: Carpe Diem | 1405 Grand Street

Carpe Diem

One of our favorite spots for wings, Carpe is the ideal atmosphere for someone who enjoys watching football at a bar but craves a smaller venue — where everybody knows your name. Tip for newbies — besides the wings, the steak bites and pasties are on point, made with seasoned ground Angus beef and potatoes stuffed in a puff pastry pocket, served with house gravy.

For a Spot You *Miiight* Catch a Retired Pro Athlete: Green Rock | 70 Hudson Street

Green Rock has been a Hoboken bar staple for years, and Football Sundays are no exception. This spot gets pretty rowdy on Sundays, and there have been NFL athlete spottings from time to time, including former Hoboken resident Eli Manning and Daniel Jones.

For Craft Beer Uptown: The Shepherd + The Knucklehead | 1313 Willow Avenue

shepherd and knucklehead

The craft beer list at The Shep is extensive and impressive — which goes hand in hand with a giant layout of TVs, everywhere. This uptown spot is a staple on football Sundays, and it’s pretty roomy, which is ideal.

For a Wall of Televisions: Black Bear Bar + Grill | 205 Washington Street

Black Bear

Great bar food and any sports fan’s dream — the giant wall of televisions is sure to keep you satisfied — even if you’re trying to watch several games at once. No need to bring your phone to watch the second one, Black Bear is playing every. single. game. PS: Another favorite wing spot!

For a Bar That Lets You Order Delivery to the Bar: Ale House | 1034 Willow Avenue

Complete with shuffleboard, darts, pool, and a jukebox, Ale House is your elevated neighborhood dive bar. Major bonuses: You can bring your dog to the bar, you can order delivery from anywhere to eat at the bar while drinking, and you can enjoy games galore.

For a Spot Close to the PATH for Your NYC Friends: Texas Arizona | 76 River Street

We all know our NYC friends can be a little reluctant when it comes to venturing into Hoboken. The solution? A bar next to the PATH: Texas Arizona. This locale is upbeat, with solid food and beverage options, and of course, the ability to get back into NYC in about 10-15 minutes.

For Martinis + Football: 10th + Willow | 935 Willow Avenue

10th and Willow

This spot is a crowd-pleaser and for good reason. Opt for the French Martini (vodka, Chambord, a splash of pineapple juice), the Cucumber Cooler (lemon, green tea, cucumber and mint vodka, seltzer), or Lycheetini (vodka, lychee liquor, and a splash of lychee juice) — three of our favorites — and it’s pretty much a fancy football Sunday.

For a Place to Watch *Real* Futbol: Mulligan’s | 159 First Street

Yes, American football is what Sundays in fall are all about in the sports world, but when it comes to the rest of the world, real football = soccer. Mulligans is THE spot to watch your favorite club team play. The starting times of soccer games vary due to time differences, but luckily this bar is always open for the game. PS: If you’re an Eagles fan (or NOT) — this is also an Eagles bar on Sundays.

For a Place to Enjoy Wine on TAP! + Football: The Brass Rail | 135 Washington Street

Yep, this pretty much seals the deal. Wine on tap > beer on tap. And Brass Rail actually has both — plus a kickass menu — including the lobster mac and cheese. Mic drop.

Another Spot for the Dogs: Schmitty’s | 359 1st Street

Similar to its predecessor Nag’s Head, Schmitty’s is super dog-friendly — a perfect spot to catch a game with your pups.

For When You’re With a Large Group: The Shannon | 106 1st Street

The classic Irish pub is lined with TVs, has tons of games, has tons of outdoor seating in addition to inside, and it knows how to throw a party (yes, there’s a dance floor too.)

For When You Want Comfort Food + Whiskey: The Stewed Cow | 400 Adams Street

The Stewed Cow is a spacious bar/restaurant with plenty of bar space and tables to dine on classic comfort food and some whiskey or bourbon while catching a game (Psst: the Buffalo Chicken Tenders are top-notch). The outdoor seating also wraps around the side of the bar.

For Checking Out a NEW Sunday Setup: 8th Street Tavern | 800 Washington Street

8th Street Tavern recently is under new management, and so is the Football Sunday situation. The spot has been upgraded to have some more sports viewing potential. There’s a new giant TV on the wall, and a full menu + drinks, of course.

For When You Want to *Maybe* Meet Someone New: McSwiggans | 110 1st Street

McSwiggans gets packed to the brim during football season — and for good reason. It has a ton of space inside and even sets up a tent outside for al fresco drinking and dining along with the other 1st Street bars. There are also a SLEW of couples that met their significant others here — so many, that we did a whole article on it here.

For BBQ + The Games: House Of ‘Que | 340 Sinatra Drive

For some delicious BBQ during the game, House of ‘Que is the place to go. There are TVs everywhere you look, so you’ll never miss a single play. Plus, they have deals on Bud Light buckets, High Noon buckets, and mimosa buckets to go alongside your BBQ. House Of ‘Que also has open-air garage doors and a picnic table set-up, to pair with a perfect view of Manhattan — which we love.

For Indugding in Wings (Lots of Them): Mike’s Wild Moose Saloon | 92 River Street

Mike’s Sunday Football deals are enough to get even the least interested fans to the bar. The Sunday Huddle swaps its usual playlist of country anthems for all-day 50-cent wings, $2 Bud Lights, $4 white and green tea shots, and $25 surprise mixed cocktail buckets. There are also giveaways each week, which anyone can enter for a chance to win a select prize — and everything is half-off during halftime. Follow Mike’s on Instagram to keep up with its weekly announcements.

For Live Music Performances: River Street Garage | 80 River Street

Taking over the former 80 River space, River Street Garage is giving all the vintage auto shop vibes, with an emphasis on live music performances. During commercial breaks and halftime, River Street Garage has guest DJs and musicians spinning tracks to keep the vibes up.
