People of the Year: Catherine + Kristin of The Hive are our Hoboken 2022 People of the Year!

Yes, Catherine + Kristen have brought us good coffee, a great remote working space, a cozy place for kids to play, and cinnamon rolls that literally fly off the counter, but the coowners of The Hive have brought so much more than that to the Mile Square. When they opened The Hive mid-pandemic, Catherine + Kristen set out to create a place that not only served delicious treats, but that also provided a way for kids, parents, and locals to find connection — and comfort. Since opening, they’ve gone above and beyond in making that mission a reality and because of that, have quickly become a local favorite. Catherine + Kristen are champions of our Hoboken community, often giving shoutouts to other businesses, supporting local charities, giving back to the community, and sharing the ins and outs of their business with other businesses in town, their patrons, and their followers. Person of the Year: Eiko La Boria of The Flow Initiative is our Jersey City 2022 Person of the Year!

The stats surrounding period poverty and access to supplies were striking to Jersey City resident Eiko La Boria prompting her into action to found The Flow Initiative.  A study done by the Flow Initiative found that in Hudson County alone, approximately 30% of local students in high school, Jersey City specifically, have missed school because of a lack of access to supplies during their periods with almost 20% experiencing the same nationwide. The non-profit’s mission is to protect all girls, women, and menstruating bodies from a lack of access to period products while erasing the stigma, shame, and humiliation associated with period poverty. This year, The Hoboken Girl again partnered with Eiko and The Flow Initiative and collected over 30,000 products for the Period Project. Over the years, Eiko has advocated for menstrual equity in the city and county at large while creating an access plan to start getting period product dispensaries and opening emergency period product distribution centers throughout the city. Her work is necessary for the community, and she hopes to take this mission nationwide. For this incredible work, Eiko La Boria of The Flow Initiative is our Jersey City 2022 Person of the Year!
