We all want the best for our furry friends. And according to experts, spaying and neutering pets significantly prolongs their life expectancy. Female cats and dogs that are intact have a larger chance of developing fatal uterine infections, and uterine, mammary gland, and other cancers. Neutering male pets eliminates the risk of testicular cancer and other reproductive issues. Additionally, spaying and neutering help combat overpopulation, which in turn lessens the need for euthanasia for unhoused pets.
According to the Hoboken Animal Hospital, getting an animal spayed or neutered is a simple surgical procedure. Pets are placed under general anesthesia and a small incision is made to remove the specific reproductive organs. The incision is then closed with sutures and the patient rests and recovers.
Post-op, some pets may need a special collar around their neck that prevents them from biting at the sutures until they heal. Pets may seem sleepy and groggy after surgery, and they may experience some redness or swelling at the incision point, but all of this is perfectly normal. If there is any concern about the patient’s recovery, call the veterinarian.
