Of course, tacos are good any day, but it’s taco Tuesday AND Cinco De Mayo is this Saturday, sooo obvi we’re gonna be a little extra with the celebrations. Us Hoboken + Jersey City residents are lucky enough to be surrounded by so many awesome authentic Mexican cuisines {so many, that it could get overwhelming}. That’s why we’ve rounded up the best places in Hoboken + Jersey City to get tacos {many paired with awesome margaritas because, duh} — you’re welcome.

Hoboken

1. Charritos {Midtown + Downtown Hoboken, and Weehawken}

Charritos has pretty much taken over Hoboken and we’re not mad about it. These BYOB spots are famous for their guacamole made-to-order and delicious margaritas {when you BYO-tequila}. Come with some time to spare, as even though they now three locations, the spaces are really intimate and the wait is usually long — but completely worth it.

Vegans, there’s even a Charritos for you — their downtown location is now a completely vegetarian + vegan restaurant. Enjoy their regular authentic Mexican cuisine, minus the meat {and let us tell you first-hand, it’s GOOD}.

2. Cadillac Cantina {138 Park Avenue}

We love this spot on taco Tuesday not only for their $3 tacos, but for the margaritas {because a good margarita is V necessary with your tacos}. Cadillac is always a winner for both taco Tuesday and Cinco De Mayo because of the decor, the tacos, and yes, those yummy margaritas.

3. Baja {104 14th Street}

When craving some Tex-Mex, hit up Baja in Uptown for food with a Western flair. Plus, they’ve got avocado margs to pair with your taco feast, so if that doesn’t intrigue you, we don’t know what will. During their summer happy hour, they have $5 margs and $4 Mexican beers, too. SOLD.

4. The Shepherd & The Knucklehead {1313 Willow Avenue}

Bored of traditional tacos? Head to The Shep for a non-traditional take including chorizo, veggie and poutine tacos — yes, it’s not an OG taco spot, but it’s always fun to switch it up. Tacos come in 3 per order, so you’ll definitely leave with a happy stomach.

5. East LA {508 Washington Street}

east la hoboken

With an entire menu of Mexican fare and a huge variety of frozen {+ on the rocks} margs, East LA is an obvious choice when it comes to celebrating taco Tuesday. Be warned — their margaritas are delish but dangerous, so when enjoying them on a Tuesday, just keep in mind that it’s still the middle of the week, ha!

6. Surf Taco {62 Newark Street}

Head over to Newark Street to enjoy a DTS staple, Surf Taco. With fresh and ingredients and an easy to order menu style, we’re glad this beach-joint made it’s way to the Mile Square. Read more about Surf Taco here.

Jersey City

7. Taqueria Downtown {354 Grove Street}

This super teeny spot located in downtown Jersey City offers a ton of {super inexpensive} tacos and other Mexican treats, including a variety of authentic Mexican beer. Highly recommended.

8. Los Tres Chilitos {456 Central Avenue}

This well kept JC Heights secret is one of the best Mexican restaurants in the Heights. They serve nothing but delicious authentic Mexican food and there is usually novela playing in the background to make it feel like you’re in Mexico at the local taqueria. The portions are big but their prices are not, which is always a plus. Need to wash those tacos down with something?  Enjoy soda in old-fashioned bottles or bring your own because this spot is BYOB, too.

9. Orale Mexican Kitchen {341 Grove Street}

When walking into Orale, there’s an entire wall of lit-up bottles, so that’s pretty much a sign that your experience is going to be, well… lit. This HG-approved taco spot is large, so you have a better chance at getting a spot AND the tacos are TDF. They also serve up a variety of types of guac, which is obv a must when eating tacos.

10. Gringo’s {12 Coles Street}

Considering Gringo’s is brought to us by the same team behind Hoboken’s Pier 13, it’s no surprise that one of the newest taco joints on the block has earned its way into our taco-loving hearts. If looking for something deliciously different, try their Buffalo Soldier, which is shrimp tempura, house-made buffalo sauce with house-made celery and carrot slaw topped with a ranch cream, or the Kim Jong Un which is their Korean short rib taco.

11. Taqueria Mi Mariachi {213 Sip Avenue}

Find this hidden gem tucked away in Journal Square {just minutes from the Journal Square PATH}. The authentic Mexican food will take your taste buds on vacation and you definitely won’t be stopping at just two {or three} tacos.  Simple menu + fresh ingredients = the perf taco experience.  Disclaimer: it’s a bit of a hole in the wall {the best usually are} and has just a couple small tables and a few counter stools, so calling ahead for pickup may be best!

12. Taqueria Viva Mexico Kitchen Cafe {133 Morris Street}

Not be confused with the other taqueria joints, this quaint shop is located in the heart of Paulus Hook. The menu has many variations of tacos to chose from and the warm and attentive staff will make anyone feel at home.  The complimentary chips and salsa will win any hangry person {#guilty} over immediately and even better — it’s BYOB {score!}.

13. **BONUS** : Tony Boloney’s for Taco Pizza

Torn between pizza and taco cravings? Don’t worry — Tony Boloney’s has got the combo covered with their insane taco pizza. Get an entire pie, or stop in for a slice, but keep in mind this special is only available on Tuesdays — we see what you did there, TB’s.
