It’s not hard to fall in love with Choc O Pain French Bakery + Cafe on 1st Street in Hoboken. With its delicious aroma of bread, coffee, and chocolate as well as its cozy chic environment, this spot is an HG fave for a cup of coffee or tea and some baked goodies in Hoboken. And they’ve expanded, three-fold {but we’re not surprised}. After opening two locations in Jersey City {530 Jersey Avenue and 330-332 Palisade Avenue in the Heights}, Choc O Pain has opened its 4th in the Hudson Tea building in Hoboken.

Hobbs Inc

When you walk into Choc O Pain, you feel like you have momentarily stepped inside of a European cafe. There is French music playing and fresh flowers along with bread and pastries galore. You’ll legit feel like you’re in Paris… not complaining.

The lovely thing about this little bakery is that it is independently owned and operated. The owner is actually French and that relaxed and quaint vibe embodies the locale.

So quaint, in fact, that people have been known to do their engagement shoots here.

As far as coffee and teas, Choc O Pain has an extensive menu. We suggest the Rooibos tea — though if you want to sweeten it up a bit, you can add a bit of agave nectar {organic, of course}.

And don’t just take our word for it — HG friends who have come to Choc O Pain with us rave about everything, from the bread to the sandwiches to the actual choc au pain. An HG fave? The macaroons and petit kouigns may take the cake. All are deeelish. Below are the chocolate, lemon, and salted caramel macaroons. So good, soooo good.

More pastries…

For the gluten intolerant, they do have one gluten-free item: gluten-free chocolate cake!

And if you’re into baking and hands-on classes, the downtown location just started offering macaron baking classes. We can speak from first-hand experience that it’s tons of fun.
