We’ve all been there: you go in for a nail appointment and decide a regular old single-color mani just won’t cut it. You’re not necessarily there for detailed nail art, but you need a little extra something to make it feel special.  Enter: the chrome mani — that sparkly shimmer that covers the top layer of your nails. The Nail Bar at 501 9th Street has new chrome colors available, so of course we had to test ’em out. Here’s a peek at what a chrome manicure in Hoboken looks like, and also a few other spots in town where you can get your chrome fix {sparkle app Kira Kira not included}:

Here’s the thing you should know about chrome manis, though – they don’t photograph nearly as beautiful as they look IRL. {Take it from us – our beauty contributor Alexandra & HG founder Jen tried lighting the above shot juuuust right to show the chrome’s full effect – but ultimately this is the best they could get}.

Here’s how the chrome process works:

  • – It all starts like a regular gel manicure. For the white/opalescent look you see above, the nail artist started by using OPI’s “Alpine Snow” — a pure, clean white, perfect as a base.
  • – After the gel polish was applied, the chrome powder was dusted on top of each nail and smoothed out with a tool that looked like a thin rubber stamp. This ensured the powder was pressed into each nail and that chromatic look was in full effect.
  • – The process was finished off with a clear, glossy coat on top to seal in the chrome powder and lock it all in.

The Nail Bar offers various shades of chrome powders – a reddish gold, greenish blue, purpleish blue, and more. It’s hard to describe the true color of the powders since they look different depending on the angle & the light, which is exactly what makes a chrome mani so fun.

A few other spots around Hoboken that offer chrome nails:

Gotham Nails {515 4th Street}

Unique Nail II {400 Newark Street}

Viva La Nails {530 Washington Street}

Hoboken Dream Nails & Spa {601 Observer Highway}

Modern Nails {728 Washington Street}

PS: This list is just a start at some of our faves around town. We called a slew of places and most didn’t offer it or know what we were referring to, but even with the above, we highly recommend calling to double check {as sometimes they can change or discontinue a service}. Comment below if you know of other nail places offering chrome to add to the list!
