Coco Havana’s New Menu: A Sampling

As if Coco Havana’s Cuban-inspired menu couldn’t get any better — it just added some new items to its repertoire. Veggie taquitos, spinach and cheese empanadas, and garlic shrimp have joined the already delicious menu. Team HG is happy to report that we did the hard work for you and tried out the new menu items ourselves — drooling just reminiscing about it.

The best part about Coco Havana, located at 32 Newark Street, is that it’s open for lunch {even during the week} as well as dinner daily — and brunch on the weekends. We stopped in for a team lunch and would totally recommend it if you’re grabbing a bite with coworkers for lunch or a meeting. If you haven’t been in for brunch though, we advise you get on that ASAP, because nothing is better than rice and beans alongside churrasco steak and eggs. PROMISE.

Now, onto the menu. On our visit, we opted for sharing a few appetizers {along with some soup since it was a chilly + rainy day}. While some people might assume appetizers as a meal would leave you unsatisfied, this was not the case at Coco Havana. The portions were huge, especially for two people, and we left very full. So, without further ado, here’s some #foodporn {because we know that’s why you’re here}:

Above is an overview of our table — veggie taquitos, Sopa de Pollo, and an appetizer sampler with guacamole, garlic shrimp toast, spinach + cheese empanadas, and fried chicken pieces paired with one spicy and one sweet sauce.

The garlic shrimp toast was BOMB, to say the least. Both the shrimp and toast were soaked in a garlicky sauce that was plate-licking good {we didn’t actually like our plates, but the thought was there}.

The guacamole was perfection. And if you haven’t had guac with plantain chips — get on that. It’s 100x better than regular tortilla chips.

On to the veggie taquitos — the perfect vegetarian cheat meal. They were stuffed, fried perfectly, and covered in a spicy sauce. Oh, and meat lovers, don’t worry — there are chicken, pork, and steak taquitos, too.

Back to the spinach and cheese empanadas, because you need a closer look. Think warm spinach dip in a crispy, warm, flaky empanadaWhile everything was equally savory and yum, these alone will have us coming back for more and the #1 standout item on the new menu. Def another great vegetarian option to order {but again, meat lovers don’t fret — there are also beef and chicken empanadas on the menu}.

Not new to the menu but worth noting is the Sopa de Pollo, a classic Cuban comfort soup. It happened to be a chilly, rainy day when we stopped in — aka much needed. It did not disappoint; the bowl was filled to the brim with veggies {including a small piece of corn on the cob}, shredded chicken, and of course, cut noodles because #carbs.

Word on the street is also that Coco also is debuted a “sangria cart” in the very near future with all the fruit + wine fixings. Plus, they have 1/2-priced menu Mondays every week aaand if you mention Hoboken Girl, you get 50% off your mojito any day of the week. NBD. {See more deals in our deals directory HERE.}

The verdict is, that if you haven’t been to Coco Havana yet for a meal, run, don’t walk to 32 Newark Street for lunch, brunch, or dinner. We only gave you a small sneak peek of the menu, but we can assure you there’s a lot more to enjoy {check out the full menu here} including churrasco steak, salmon, Cuban sandwiches, and more.
