If you love Dozzino in Hoboken, then you’re going to be excited for some foodie updates {especially if you live in or frequent Jersey City Heights}. Marc Magliozzi of Dozzino is opening a restaurant in Jersey City Heights that will be called Corto. This new Italian eatery in the Heights will have a simple {yet delicious} menu that they affectionately refer to as “poor kitchen of Italy”-style eats, where the food is simple, fresh, reasonably-priced, and of course, homemade with local ingredients. We got a peek inside the new spot, Corto, {located at 507 Palisade Avenue in Jersey City Heights} that is set to open this month — check it out, below:

The New Space

Corto boasts a total old-school Italian feel with exposed brick, a wide-open kitchen, and once the cooking starts happening, you’ll transport to Italy {or your Italian grandmother’s house}. Believe it or not, before Corta took over, the space was home to a bodega. The owners and partners Drew Buzzio {of Salumeria Biellesse, Biricchino}, Marc Magliozzi {of Dozzino}, and Peter Fontana made it over with a simple-yet-elevated interior.

All of the tables and chairs in the restaurant are wood, made locally just for Corto by Waded Collective. There is seating for about 30 people including one communal table and a large table specifically for big groups.

As for outdoor seating, similar to Dozzino’s in Hoboken, they’re converting the entire backyard in the back to outdoor dining seating. Stay tuned, but fingers crossed it happens sooner rather than later!

The kitchen is wide open for all customers to see, so if you sit at the bar, prepare for the ultimate dining experience {as the chefs will apparently be cooking on the counter right in front of you}.

The Food

Corto’s menu is going to be similar to a home-cooked meal experience — and definitely meant to be shared. This does not mean family-style, moreso a simple menu including food that most likely the entire table will want to share. “Cucina povera”, meaning poor kitchen; in effect: easy, uncomplicated dishes that don’t require a ton of ingredients and additives.

All dishes will be made from fresh, local ingredients and all the pasta will be made from scratch daily, with recipes that have been passed down for generations— and if you’ve ever had homemade pasta, you know what a difference it makes.
