New Jersey dancers who wanted to learn from active industry professionals used to cross the Hudson to take dance lessons in New York City. AXIS School of Dance, located at 115 Grand Street in Hoboken, changed the game by bringing this same experience to the Mile Square. This local dance school provides a pre-professional environment for dancers ages 1 to 17 who want to take jazz, ballet, hip-hop, acro, and other dance classes from active industry professionals. Construction is currently underway for a new, bigger studio space in downtown Hoboken that will be ready for the fall semester. Keep reading to learn about the pre-professional training program at AXIS School of Dance in Hoboken + the new studio space that will open in September.

Dance Classes Taught By Active Industry Professionals

Students can take ballet, tap, jazz, broadway, contemporary, acro, and hip-hop classes at AXIS School of Dance. The classes emphasize a strong base in technique, what they consider to be the most important aspect of dance, in addition to body alignment, and of course performance.

Every class is taught by an active professional who has years of industry experience. AXIS teachers have danced with Taylor Swift + Beyoncé, choreographed the Super Bowl halftime show, been a company member with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and performed on Broadway as well as other national Broadway tours.

AXIS School of Dance at its core is a training facility, not a designated competition school, which means students are not required to compete, but are given it as an option.

“Our focus is on developing great dancers through practice, exposing them to other top choreographers through conventions, and bringing guest artists into our studio,” Lauren said.

Weekly classes are available each semester. The upcoming fall-spring semester runs for 37 weeks starting on September 9th. New students can sign up for one free trial class to help decide which style of dance is right for them.

Interested dancers ages 6 and older can also sign up for the one-week summer intensive for a taste of the AXIS School of Dance experience. This summer intensive lasts from July 15th to July 19th from 9AM-5PM. This week-long summer camp helps dancers improve their strength, flexibility, and creative spirit.

The new, larger studio will be located on Grand between 1st + 2nd Street. The AXIS team is excited to have a brand new studio in Hoboken to provide additional classes for dancers in the community. With the bigger space, AXIS will have more classes including some with more convenient afterschool times.

“Watching dancers grow, hone their craft, and find their creative voice,” is what makes the job rewarding according to Lauren. “Each student has something special to bring and seeing them find that spark is worth it all.”
