Urban Market Hoboken Inches Towards Opening on Washington Street
Back in October of 2022, The Hoboken Girl reported that Brooklyn-based shop Dumbo Market is officially coming to Hoboken at 1425 Washington Street, under the name Hoboken Market. Construction started at the massive space near the Hudson Tea House on Tuesday, January 23rd, 2024. Now, we know that Urban Market is just weeks away from making its debut on Washington Street. Candidates Running for New Jersey Governor in 2025
New Jersey is set to elect a new governor in 2025. Governor Phil Murphy has served two terms as governor and cannot seek reelection. As of January 2025, there are six Democrats and eight Republicans looking to become the next governor. The filing date for the primary election is March 24th, 2025. The 2025 primary election will be on June 10th and the 2025 New Jersey gubernatorial election is scheduled to take place on November 4th. Click here for more.
Hoboken + Jersey City Businesses Going to Super Bowl LIX
On Sunday, February 9th, the two-time consecutive champs the Kansas City Chiefs will take on the Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans, Louisiana starting at 6:30PM ET. This year, the Super Bowl has some local ties, as a few Hudson County businesses are involved. Bird Flu Found in Three New York Boroughs
The bird flu has been making its rounds in the news the last few weeks, and it’s getting closer to home. On Friday, February 7th, live poultry markets in New York City and parts of the NYC suburbs were ordered to shut down for a week, sparking some rising concerns. This was after seven birds were found infected with the H5N1 strain of Avian Flu, also known as the Bird Flu, during a routine inspection of live markets in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens boroughs. A Lodi man was charged with murder after a report of a fatal shooting that occurred in Hoboken on February 1st. Per a Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office press release, after an extensive four-day investigation, the Homicide Unit alleges that Erick Fernandez, 26, fatally shot Julio Flores, 23, of Passaic, at the Hoboken waterfront near Castle Point Skate Park. Allegedly, following the shooting, Erick fled with the victim’s personal belongings, including his vehicle, and later returned to the scene to dispose of Julio’s body in the Hudson River.
Barcade to Close its Jersey City Location in June
Barcade in Jersey City announced that it will close its doors soon. The arcade bar shared that after an amazing 14-year run, its lease is ending and the last day of service will be June 15th. In the meantime, Barcade is opening a location on Cortlandt Street in lower Manhattan this spring. Click here for more.
The Fox + Crow in Jersey City Announces its Permanent Closure
Jersey City Heights has lost a longtime local haunt — The Fox + Crow announced its permanent closure as of February 2025. The bar had taken January “to rest and recharge,” posting on its social media about a winter break. On Thursday, February 6th, 2025, it announced permanence of the closure. Click here for more.
City of Hoboken Warns Residents of Falling Rocks on Sinatra Drive
The City of Hoboken’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM) warned residents about potential falling rocks on Sinatra Drive in the afternoon of Monday, February 3rd, 2025. Per an X post, the OEM is investigating reports of falling rocks near the area of 9th Street + Sinatra Drive. Residents are encouraged to avoid the western sidewalk from approximately 8th Street to 9th Street along Sinatra Drive, which is temporarily closed at this time. Click here for more.
Hoboken's Two01 Salon to Open Second Location in Chatham
Ashley Branda, owner of Hoboken's Two01 Salon, noticed over the years that her clients were getting married and moving to the suburbs. She recently decided to open a second location in Chatham. The new salon is located at the former T.M. Ward Coffee space at 7 South Passaic Avenue and is hosting a soft opening on February 11th. The salon hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday 10AM-8PM. Nana’s Deli in Jersey City Offering 50% Off In-Store Purchases in February
Nana’s Deli is a new secret-ish Jersey City pop-up Jewish deli inside of the newly revamped Harborside building on the waterfront. Jersey City Pizza Fest Happening This Spring
A brand-new festival is coming to Chilltown. The first-ever Jersey City Pizza Fest will take place on Saturday, March 29th from 1PM-5PM to kick off the start of the spring season. New Art Installation 'Star Light Star Bright' at Hoboken's Pier A Park
In 2025, Hoboken Business Alliance continues its tradition of inventive art installations with a new, interactive pavilion at Pier A Park. Called Star Light Star Bright, the activation is the work of Nancy Hou and Josh de Sousa of Hou De Sousa, a design studio with roots in downtown Brooklyn. Heights Fitness Opens New Location in Downtown Jersey City

Heights Fitness in Downtown Jersey City recently opened its new location at 151 Newark Avenue along the Pedestrian Plaza. The gym offers members 24-hour access. Monthly memberships do not require a contract but do auto-renew each month. These memberships can be canceled at any time before the first of the month and there are no fees associated with cancelation.
Hoboken Residents Receive Small Refunds from Energy Provider
In January, Hoboken residents reported getting high electric bills last month after being switched to a green provider. Hoboken Councilwoman Tiffanie Fisher shared in her newsletter last month that her energy bill was double the prior month. Although the city said there were billing errors and promised refunds, some residents have reported that the refunds received were small.
Hoboken Police Officer Applications Open on March 1st
The City of Hoboken, the Hoboken Public Safety Department, and the Hoboken Police Department announced on February 3rd that applications to become a Hoboken Police Officer, via the New Jersey Civil Service Commission, will be available on March 1, 2025. Per a City of Hoboken press release, applicants must live in the state of New Jersey, be between the ages of 18 and 35 years old, have a high school diploma or equivalent, and never have been convicted of a felony. Waffle It + Co. Closes Pavonia Avenue Location in Jersey City
The Belgian Plate by Waffle It + Co. announced via Instagram that its second location at 232 Pavonia Avenue in Jersey City is now closed. Its other location at 210 Hudson Street in Harborside remains open. This breakfast shop specializes in Belgian Liège waffles and crepes.
Jersey City Man Charged in Triple Homicide Stabbing of Woman + Two Children
A Hudson County man has been charged with killing two children and a woman in a triple homicide that took place in Jersey City on January 30th. According to a Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office press release, Napoleon Romero-Anduray, 31, of Jersey City, was charged with three counts of murder. The Jersey City Police Department responded to a stabbing at 12:15AM on Thursday at 272 Hutton Street. Authorities found Luisa Urbano, 31, of Jersey City, dead in an apartment at that location with multiple stab wounds. Her two children were also found at the scene with multiple stab wounds. Juan Martin Urbano, her 9-year-old son, and Diana Ramirez, her 5-year-old daughter, were taken to Jersey City Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead. The matter remains under investigation.
GoFundMe Created for Funeral Expenses of Murdered Jersey City Mother + Children
The aunt of Luisa Urbano, who was murdered in Jersey City on January 30th along with her two children, nine-year-old Juan Martin Urbano and five-year-old Diana Ramirez, is asking for help with funeral expenses. Lizeth Alejandra Gutierrez Escobar created a GoFundMe page to raise funds to cover the funeral expenses and the repatriation of her niece and her two children. “This unimaginable tragedy has left our family devastated. We are from Colombia, and we need to bring them back home so their loved ones can say their final goodbyes,” she said.

The Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force is investigating a fatal Jersey City fire that claimed one life on January 31st at 1000 Newark Avenue. Shortly after 6PM, the Jersey City Fire Department responded to a fire in the vicinity of 1000 Newark Avenue, the address for Adrian’s Truck Sales, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said in a statement. Upon arrival, members of the JCFD located and extinguished the fire. After completion of fire suppression activities, firefighters found an unidentified man in a fire-damaged makeshift shelter. The man was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 6:49PM. The cause and manner of death are pending the findings of the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.
Hoboken Mayor Bhalla Releases Statement on White House’s Federal Funding Freeze
Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla released a statement on January 29th on the White House’s attempt to freeze federal funding: “It was announced earlier today that the White House rescinded its cruel and heartless federal funding freeze, yet just moments ago President Trump’s press secretary stated it remains in effect. The intent of this chaos is a blatant attempt to hold residents, organizations and local governments hostage in a political game that will cause irreparable harm, nationwide. The consequences in cities like Hoboken would be devastating, especially for those that receive Section 8 vouchers, non-profits providing lifesaving services for communities, schools that depend on federal funding to serve their students, and much more. Going forward, we must remain vigilant at all times to combat these threats in the months and years ahead.”

Sean Kingston celebrated his 35th birthday on February 6th in Hoboken with four mini-concerts at Madd Hatter. At the celebration(s), the 2000s icon performed some of his top hits. Updates on ‘The Biscuit Babe’ Replacing Former D’s Soul Full in Hoboken
After 17 years, D’s Soul Full Cafe announced its closure in May 2023 at 918 Willow Avenue in Hoboken. ‘The Biscuit Babe’ is the new exterior signage that appeared in its place. Although specific details regarding the menu and opening date are limited, the restaurant’s Instagram photos focus on serving breakfast, brunch, and biscuits. Two Hoboken Firefighters Reopen Green Pear Cafe
Two Hoboken firefighters have come together to re-open an Italian-style cafe in Hoboken. The New Jersey natives have taken over the Italian eatery and coffee shop — Green Pear Cafe — in Hoboken and reopened it as The Pear Hoboken. Hudson County Celebrates Black History Month with Flag Raising

On February 4th, Hudson County Executive Craig Guy and the Board of County Commissioners celebrated Black History Month at the Historic Brennan Courthouse with a flag raising of the Pan-African Flag. Per a Hudson County press release, Guy will also host a Black History Month Celebration on Wednesday, February 12th at 6PM at Secaucus Hudson County Schools of Technology, Frank J. Gargiulo Campus. The theme of this year’s event is “African Americans and Labor.” The presentation is open to the public and honors the achievements and history of each community-nominated individual with an evening of dinner, entertainment, and remarks by prominent figures in our county.
City of Hoboken Awarded Recreation Program of the Year for Youth Soccer
The City of Hoboken announced on February 6th that non-profit New Jersey Youth Soccer awarded the Recreation Division’s soccer program the Recreation Program of the Year presented by MLS Go. Per a City of Hoboken press release, the award was given at the 35th Annual New Jersey Youth Soccer Awards Dinner presented by RWJBarnabas Health in front of a sold-out crowd of over 1,000 attendees.
CEO of Hudson County Boys + Girls Clubs, Gary Greenberg, Passes Away
Gary Greenberg, Executive Director and CEO of the Boys + Girls Clubs of Hudson County, passed away earlier this week. Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla released a statement on his passing. "Gary Greenberg's passing is a loss for Hoboken. For years, Gary dedicated himself to enriching the lives of countless children who passed through the Boys & Girls Club. His contributions to our City and region will be remembered for years to come.” Funeral services will be held on February 9th at 12:30PM at Cedar Park Sanctuary in Paramus, NJ.
Hoboken High School to Host Mental Health + Wellness Event
On May 1st, Hoboken High School’s School-Based Youth Services Program (SBYSP) will host a Mental Health and Wellness Event for high school students at the Louis M. Taglieri Stadium from 8AM-3PM. In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month in May, the program’s goal is to introduce students to activities and community resources that encourage positive health and wellness. The SBYSP is looking for volunteer agencies that are interested in providing students with knowledge and resources. All volunteer agencies will be assigned a space on the football field for set up.
Jersey Art Book Fair to Return for 2025
The third annual Jersey Art Book Fair will return to Jersey City from February 21st-23rd at Mana Contemporary, 888 Newark Avenue. The event, presented by Dense Magazine and hosted by Monira Foundation and Mana Contemporary, will feature 200 exhibitors, including publishing houses, artists, designers, collectives, galleries, and university programs. After winning the Grammys for Album of the Year and Best Country Album for "Cowboy Carter," Beyoncé will return to the stage for her “Cowboy Carter” tour. The Latest Updates on the NJ Turnpike Expansion Project
A New Jersey state project to revitalize roadways between Jersey City and Bayonne continues to receive backlash from several Jersey City leaders. The project aims to rebuild over eight miles of roads and bridges between Interchange 14 and Jersey Avenue in Jersey City. City leaders say the project will increase traffic and have negative impacts on the environment, but others are saying the construction is necessary to update the aging infrastructure. Jack Gibson, the owner of Mad One Jacks hair salon, announced that the business officially closed on February 8th. Mad One Jacks was located at 92 Madison Street in Hoboken and served the community for over 20 years. Jack can now be found at 6th Borough Salon, just one block away at 133 Madison Street.
Hoboken City Council Approves 5-Year Contract for EMS
The City of Hoboken and the Hoboken Public Safety Department announced via a press release the City Council's approval of a five-year contract for Hoboken Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) and Volunteer Ambulance Corps (HVAC), solidifying HEMS/HVAC as the long-term provider of Basic Life Support (BLS) services in the City. Hoboken EMS has 169 members, including 20 paid EMTs working from 7AM-7PM, Monday through Friday, with volunteers supporting during, and outside of those times.

Tropicalia Resort Wear, a shop specializing in luxury resort wear, including swimsuits, cover-ups, and accessories is opening soon in Bayonne. The shop is located at 174 1/2 Broadway and the grand opening is taking place on February 22nd from 9AM-8PM.
Hoboken Salon, The Chic Collective, Opens Second Location in Jersey City
Hoboken salon, The Chic Collective, opened a second location in Jersey City at 363 Second Street. The salon provides hair services, blonding and extensions, makeup, luxury spray tans both in-salon and in-home and bridal services.
Hoboken City Council Unanimously Approves Parklet Ordinance
The Hoboken City Council debated two parklet ordinances, ultimately approving one on first reading after rejecting one up for second reading at the February 5th meeting. The first reading ordinance on outdoor dining parklets, sponsored by 2nd Ward Councilwoman Tiffanie Fisher and Councilwoman-at-Large Emily Jabbour, mandates the entire area underneath the parklet to be available for daily cleaning and/or inspection, effective as of April 1st. The ordinance up for second reading would mandate removable decking for cleaning and maintenance, effective about a month from now. The second reading failed 5-3, with Councilmen Ruben Ramos, Mike Russo, and Paul Presinzano voting yes. The ordinance up for first reading eventually passed unanimously (8-0).

Departed Soles Announces Gluten-Free Beer Inspired by Hayley’s Donuts
Departed Soles announced on Instagram that they teamed up with Hayley’s Donuts to create something special. The brewery crafted two gluten-free beers inspired by doughnuts from Hayley’s. The two flavors are Chocolate Frosted Donut and Strawberry Frosted Donut. They are only available at Departed Soles’ Tasting Room at 150 Bay Street while supplies last. They are extremely limited and are only available in flights and full pours.
