Besides being the official start to summer and all things outdoorsy, June is also a month that is very near and dear to our hearts — Pride Month. Because at Hoboken Girl, love = love = love = love. So in doing a little research into all of the things happening in the month to celebrate our LGBT+ friends, we came across a very special situation indeed: Flatbread Grill has teamed up with Hudson Pride and created ‘Rainbow Hummus’ in honor of this very special time of year where we celebrate gay pride – available starting June 15th.

The restaurant, owned by three sisters: Gonca, Arzu, and Fusun, is located at 517 Washington Street in Hoboken {+ a new location in Journal Square}, is known for its Turkish and Middle Eastern cuisine {and hummus, obviously}. The idea for colorful hummus wasn’t thaaat far fetched as they make traditional hummus daily — but definitely took a lot of planning and scheming. “When we found out about Hudson Pride Connections Center in Jersey City and that it needed some assistance, and we knew we had to do something,” Gonca recalled. So they created something unforgettable {and totally Insta-worthy}: Rainbow Hummus.

“We are donating 25% of all proceeds from the sale of this menu item to the Hudson Pride Connections Center in Jersey City, NJ — an amazing non-profit that helps to raise awareness for the LGTBQ demographic in this country.” Hudson Pride supports a very high at-risk population, and offers educational sessions, events, meetings, and information sessions. They also have a LGBT teen program and have a prom yearly — completely grant funded {so donations really do help!}. To further spread awareness from the outside-in, the ladies have also invited Hudson Pride’s members to come to their shop and paint a message of love on their storefront. Love {literally}.

Okay now back to the hummus, because we know it’s almost too pretty to be true. This isn’t just any type of rainbow hummus. It’s actually carefully curated and created from scratch by the ladies of the Flatbread Grill in their on-site kitchen. Gonca shared a bit inside of the process of creating this {get this: SANS FOOD COLORING – each flavor is created naturally with ingredients from the garden!}. Here’s the rundown of what each colorful flavor is {all with a chickpea base}:

  • Red {sweet beet}
  • Orange {roasted carrot}
  • Yellow {tumeric}
  • Green {garlic herb}
  • Blue {traditional with spirulina}
  • Purple {roasted cabbage}

And that, my friends, is how you make rainbow hummus without food coloring. Love {and chickpeas} wins.

The hummus is sold as a large party platter for $100, but smaller sizes will only cost you around $6-10 — so definitely something you can easily snag for lunch or dinner. They also have adorable hummus push pops, perfect for on-the-go snacking and ‘gramming.

Since we were so inspired by the Hudson Pride/Flatbread Grill mission, we wanted to continue to spread the awareness.

Make sure to say Hoboken Girl sent ya when you order!

Gonca shared, “The LGTBQ community is still severely underserved, with their voices going unheard and policies and politics violating their basic human rights. It is the hope of my sisters and I that we can play a small role in giving them a voice and offering some sort of financial support so they can continue their outreach efforts.”

You can order Rainbow Hummus online here or stop into the store this month — it can be picked up or shipped {on dry ice}. PS: it’s vegan!
