Our Hoboken Bride series is back — and we’re sharing the ins and outs of obtaining a marriage license, which is the first step to becoming legally wed in the state of New Jersey. With all the other dizzying details that go into planning a wedding, this is one task that cannot be overlooked, but can also be rather simple if you are prepared. Jersey brides, rejoice! Follow our simple marriage license guide to get to the altar as seamlessly as possible.

What you’ll need:

  • Proof of identity {driver’s license, passport, or state/federal ID}
  • Proof of residency
  • Social security card OR social security number
  • A witness {anyone over 18, we recommend someone special to the couple — it makes it fun!} who has known you over two years
  • $28 *CASH ONLY*

It also helps to have a copy of your birth certificate. If this is not your first marriage, you should also bring along a decree of annulment or marriage termination.

Where you’ll go:

Your marriage license application needs to be obtained from the New Jersey municipality in which you or your partner resides, and it is then valid throughout the state. If neither of you are an official New Jersey resident, the application can be submitted in the municipality where the marriage ceremony will take place, and it will only be valid in the municipality in which it is issued.

Once you have applied:

New Jersey has a 72-hour wait time before your marriage license is issued that begins once it is filed with your Local Registrar. Once issued and picked up, the license is valid for six months from the date it was accepted by the Registrar.

Don’t forget your license!

Your officiant, celebrant, religious official, etc. will {hopefully} remind you several times before you make it to the altar, “DON’T FORGET YOUR MARRIAGE LICENSE!” But seriously, don’t. We recommend packing it in the bag you’ll be bringing all of your other day-of essentials days before the wedding. Then, there’s nothing left to do but to eat, drink, and be married!
