Whether you have celiac disease or a gluten sensitivity, the hassle {and the value} of getting quality food that is truly gluten-free at a favorite neighborhood eatery is real. Luckily, more gluten-free options at restaurants are becoming the norm, but finding a place that not only has choices but also tempting carb-tastic ones is indeed a hard-to-find gem. Not to fear — below are some restaurants in Jersey City that have gluten-free options — both super accommodating for your dietary needs and amazing food, minus the gluten…from breakfast all the way to happy hour.
Brownstone Diner {426 Jersey Avenue, Jersey City + 860 River Road, Edgewater}
Wanting a piece of Brownstone’s famous breakfast but aren’t in the mood for an omelette {which if gluten-free, you’re probably sick of by now}? The next best thing is finding out that yes, they do have gluten-free pancakes! Additionally, substitute GF for any of the crazy fun compilations already on the menu. Read more about our visit here.
The Cliff {38 Congress Street}
Situated in the Heights, this BYOB breakfast/lunch spot offers any of their entrees or meals on gluten-free bread – think avocado toast, kimchi grilled cheese {and you thought grilled cheese couldn’t get any better} with tasty smoothies and coffee to boot.
WHOS Gluten-Free {80 Mallory Avenue}
This all-natural bakery and brunch joint has a dedicated gluten-free kitchen serving all manner of treats including cupcakes, cookies and granola. Check out their highly reviewed bagels {fresh, not frozen} as well as their pizza and other brunch options every Saturday from 11-4.

John’s Pizzeria {87 Sussex Street}
Located in the Paulus Hook section of town on Sussex Street, John’s has awesome gluten-free personal pizzas that are big enough {and then some} for 1 person, made using John’s own dough — so no frozen stuff that’s just been re-heated {note: the pizzas are cooked in the same oven as regular pizza, but can be cooked on a separate pan at your request}. So pile on the yummy toppings and relish in the true pizza experience you’ve been dreaming about since you cut gluten out of your diet.
Two Boots {133 Newark Avenue}
Everyone’s favorite neighborhood joint with funky pizzas also offers something for the gluten-free {and vegan, too}. Featuring personal pre-made gluten-free pies, now you don’t have to feel left out of the {pizza} party to eat at Two Boots.
Roman Nose {125 Newark Avenue}
Arguably one of the best places to get Italian in downtown Jersey City, Roman Nose also offers gluten-free pasta, which can be ordered for any one of their enjoyable dishes {just double check that the other ingredients in the dish are also gluten-free}. The servers here will make sure to ask if there is a gluten allergy present and cook all pasta in separate, gluten-free cookware.
Teppan Bar & Grill {319 Warren Street}
A majority of the sushi here is gluten-free {exception: any roll with spicy mayo, which contains soy sauce, and obvs, no tempura} so you have your pick of most rolls off the menu. Teppan will also provide gluten-free soy sauce upon request.

Taqueria {Various Locations Around Jersey City}
This awesome little taco joint is usually packed, so get there early for a seat, and enjoy all the tacos which are served traditional style on corn tortillas. Feel free to dig into any of their amazing selections such as carnitas or chorizo, served in portions of 3 – warning: the tacos look small but will fill you up quickly.
Talde {8 Erie Street}
You may already know that this Asian fusion restaurant has amazing food. We were also pleasantly surprised to see that Talde marks off gluten-free dishes on their menu AND can make just about any dish gluten-free, with the exception of traditional noodle dishes such as wontons or chow fun. Check out the edamame dumplings {we had to double check these were gluten-free because they were so delicious}, shrimp shumai, or the beef short rib kare kare.
Left Bank Burger Bar {194 Newark Avenue}
This enticing burger joint on Newark Ave. offers gluten-free buns, so build your own and enjoy all that meaty goodness accompanied by a yummy cocktail or great beer on tap.
Departed Soles Brewery {150 Bay Street #2A}
Since going gluten-free, you probably have realized that a good gluten-free beer is not easy to come by. Happily Departed Soles has both certified 100% gluten-free beer and regular beer on tap to satisfy all crowds. Check out their wonderfully bitter GoodB IPA: Four My Homie {you’ll forget it’s gluten-free, srsly} and A Dark Night, their rendition of a dark ale; both quality brews that are always available in addition to any seasonal GF beer on tap.
Disclaimer: Please let any of these restaurants know if you have Celiac disease or are sensitive to gluten. These restaurants/food choices were suggested by a person who is gluten-free, but it is always safe to double check before ordering.
