It’s not hard to fall in love with Choc O Pain on 1st Street in Hoboken. With its delicious smells of bread, coffee, and chocolate as well as its cozy and clean environment, it is one of my favorite spots for a cup of coffee or tea in the mile square.
When you walk into Choc O Pain, you feel like you have momentarily stepped inside of a European cafe. There is French music playing, fresh flowers, and bread and pastries galore. I feel like I’m back in Paris during my study abroad…not complaining.
The lovely thing about this little bakery is that it is independently owned and operated. The owner is ACTUALLY French (which gets me excited!) and that relaxed and quaint vibe embodies the locale. It is the perfect addition to the bustling area of downtown Hoboken!
As far as coffee and teas, Choc O Pain has an extensive menu. One of my favorites is the Rooibos tea, which I usually add a bit of agave nectar (organic, of course) to sweeten it up.
As far as breads and pastries, because I try to stay gluten free as much as I can, I haven’t tried a lot. However, my friends who have come to Choc O Pain with me rave about everything – from the bread to the sandwiches to the actual choc au pain. I must admit I have tried the macaroons. And they are deeelish. Below are the chocolate, lemon, and salted caramel macaroons. So good, so goood.
They do have one gluten free item: gluten-free chocolate cake! I didn’t try any, but I told the barista that I was excited that they made it (and that there were pieces missing).
As you can tell, this wonderful place makes supporting local business easy. Whether you just want to grab espresso on the go or sit down and enjoy the FREE Wifi with an iced coffee and a croque monsieur, Choc O Pain is the place to go. And, they just opened their second store in Jersey City. CONGRATS!
Have you been? Where is your favorite place to grab coffee and a croissant?
