Apple picking and pumpkin coffees are fun and all, but let’s not forget what October is really all about — getting terribly, awfully scared right out of your pants. If you haven’t experienced it, New Jersey is packed with some pretty creepy ish {how many other states have their own devil?}. For anyone daring enough to go, we’ve put together a guide to haunted houses, fields, asylums, and forests in North Jersey — all within an hour of Hoboken. Read on… if you dare.

Bane Haunted House {600 W. Mount Pleasant Ave, Livingston}

One of the larger indoor haunted houses, Bane is 40,000 square feet and is definitely not for the faint of heart. If you go with a group of people, don’t expect to stay with them inside, as many people have said that you feel completely disoriented. Between having to crawl into small spaces as well as being spun around by demons and ghouls {YIKES}, it’s no wonder why Bane has been considered one of Jersey’s best for the last few years. They’re open Thursday through Sunday all month, as well as October 18th, 25th, 30th and 31st. Their doors open at 7:00PM and tickets are $28. If the kids are looking for a scare too, they offer a child-friendly version on Sundays from 3-5PM.

Haunted Hamilton {360 Hamilton Street, Rahway}

Hosted at the Union County Performing Arts Center’s Hamilton Stage, Haunted Hamilton is a haunted theater attraction that runs from 7-11PM from October 27th to 31st. If you’re looking to do the time warp again, on October 28th, the first 200 guests for the 7PM haunt will get free admission to a screening of Rocky Horror Picture Show. Bring the kids early for the family-friendly version running from 1-3PM. Adult tickets are $15 and children’s are $10.

Fear in the Forest {182 City Line Road, Pemberton}

On October 13th and 14th, this two-day haunt takes visitors on a dark trip around cranberry bogs and blueberry bushes that are home to clowns, ghouls, and possibly the Jersey Devil himself. They open the gates at 10PM, and while this is a free tour, the suggested donations are $10 for ages 16 and up, $5 for ages 5-15, and free for ages four and under.

The Dark Carnival {136 Atlantic City Blvd, Bayville}

Open every Friday – Sunday in October and for $20, the Dark Carnival is what nightmares are made of… no, we’re not kidding. With sideshow creatures like Morbus the Aquatic Fish Boy, Algano the Amphibious Lizard Man, Mongo the Human Mutant, the Meat Grinder, Pig Man, the pitch-black Night Terrors, and The Sanitarium, our dreams may be haunted ’till next Halloween.

Haunted Scarehouse {105 West Dewey Ave, Wharton}

Two floors means double the scare, and that’s exactly what you’ll get at the Haunted Scarehouse, with themes and characters straight out of a horror film like the bloody butchers, evil Pennywise-type clowns, and evil dragons. This year, they’ve added a new {and terrifying} attraction: finding your own way out of the haunted house and through the {figurative} hands of the Hayden family. For $28, they’re open every Friday – Sunday in October and on Halloween.

AXIS School of Dance

Brighton Asylum {2 Brighton Ave., Passaic}

Brighton Asylum is full of creatures and different obstacles put in place to scare {and on some days, grab} anyone that walks in. Waiting outside, you’ll be greeted with costumed creatures who are looking to give the guests a preview of what they’ll find inside. While they’re open every Friday and Saturday in October, they offer “contact nights” {for those who want a little extra creepiness in their night}, on October 12th, 19th, 26th, and 31st. To experience this horror in the dark for the “lights out” experience, make your way over on November 4th. Get your tickets at $25 ahead of time and $29 on site.

House of Horrors {645 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick}

This haunted experience offers the “face your nightmares” theme for $5 and a haunted hayride for $5 as well. Open every Friday and Saturday through October, you can enjoy this haunt from 7PM – 10:30PM. While House of Horrors is designed to scare anyone that comes near, the proceeds go to Project Gift — a program that provides holiday toys and gifts to families in need, so you can feel good about feeling scared.

Scare Farm {120 South Branch Road, Hillsborough}

What could be scarier than a haunted field? Not much. Scare Farm integrates all of the haunts into one open — and totally scary — field of terror. Between air pumps spraying at your feet, clowns glaring at you from inside a funhouse, and characters with chainsaws running alongside you, this is definitely one of the creepier spots on the list. They offer three different frights to choose from: Creepy Hallow, Paranoia, and The Slay Ride. They open at 6:30PM and run every Friday through Sunday in October. One fright is $16, two is $26, and all three are $35.

Where will you be getting your scare on this October?
