“A debate has one purpose, one purpose only, and that is to facilitate the exchange of ideas directly between two candidates, and that’s it.” Clearly Jim Lehrer {longtime Presidential debate moderator} wasn’t talking about Hoboken, where we have SIX mayoral candidates, 14 city council candidates, and 9 board of education candidates.

In our next piece in the Hoboken Girl political series, we wanted to bring you all the info you need to know about the upcoming debates. These debates are the best place to get to know your local candidates, understand their positions on the issues, and inform your choice when you go to the ballot box on November 7th. {Still need to register to vote? Check out our post on all things voter registration here.}

There are four local debates: Two for City Council, one for Board of Education, and one for Mayor. These debates are open to the public — meaning you can go! {Shout out to our friends at The Hoboken Quality of Life Coalition for hosting these Candidate Forums.}

About the Local Debates

Each forum begins at 7PM and lasts about two hours, with a brief intermission.

This year’s candidates forums will follow the established format that the Hoboken QLC has maintained for over a decade, with questions submitted on index cards by members of the audience and posed to each of the candidates in turn by moderator Bob Bowdon, a professional interviewer and longtime resident of Hoboken.

Each candidate will have a minute and a half to respond, and the order of response will be randomized each round. John Heinis, Chief News Correspondent at HudsonCountyView.com, will moderate the Board of Education forum October 19th.

About the QLC

The Hoboken Quality of Life Coalition {QLC} is an all-volunteer organization concerned about the air, earth and water, the density of development, the need for open space, the lack of parking, the flooding, and the host of difficulties that militate against a good and healthy living environment in this densely populated urban city.

Since 2000, they have been actively advocating for these causes. The QLC was designated as a 501c3 organization by the IRS in 2000, and all contributions to the QLC are tax deductible. The QLC is grateful for the support of Mile Square Theatre, the City of Hoboken’s Multiservice Center, the Parish of Our Lady of Grace and St. Joseph, and Stevens Institute of Technology and its Student Government Association, along with many volunteers who will help to run these events.
