The Grind Shop + How it Was Born

I am one of the three partners at The Grind Shop in Jersey City. The Grind Shop is the brainchild of my husband Michael and I — and our best friend Charles. All self-proclaimed coffee connoisseurs, we’re serious about coffee. We share an affinity for coffee shop interiors and we just love the culture. It’s a daily ritual that brings people together. Thus The Grind Shop was born in Fall of 2015! Having a business with two other partners can be challenging but we all have very clear roles. Charles handles the shop’s interior design and day-to-day operations. Michael handles the finances and creative. I handle f&b and our social media. I also moonlight as a fashion consultant, after having worked at the biggest fashion magazines for 15+ years. One of the many hats I wear, and most importantly, is being a mom of two kids.

On What Motivates and Inspires Her

My husband Michael is my biggest source of inspiration. He’s a self-made entrepreneur who also wears many hats and has his hands in different things. He’s taught me to dream big and take chances, “without great risk there is no great reward”.

About Her Goals and Passions

I started my own fashion consulting agency this year. My goal is to build that business while continuing to grow The Grind Shop as well. We are opening up The Grind General this Spring. It will be a general store/coffee shop, where we will be selling artisanal food products/ locally sourced groceries, and of course coffee and prepared
foods. I have a passion for food and fashion and I’m fortunate enough to be doing what I love and somehow marrying those to worlds together.

A Typical Day in the Life

My day starts with getting the kids ready for school while simultaneously trying to post something on The Grind’s social assets. Once the kids are gone that’s where my day really begins, and I quietly get to enjoy my morning coffee. I work on the computer answering emails and creating content for all aspects of the businesses. I’ll usually go into the city for a few hours for fashion appointments and client meetings. Then I’ll try and pop into the shop for an hour to check-in.

The Highs + Lows

The highs are there’s never a dull moment. It’s always go-go-go from the minute I wake up until I settle in for bed. It’s very inspiring and exciting. The lows of having your own business is you really never have a day off. There’s always something to do.

Highlight of Career {So Far}

The highlight in my career is having worked with so many talented people in the fashion industry and having worked at some of the best magazines.

The most rewarding part of my job is making our customers happy. There’s no other feeling like it!

What a Day Off is Like

Spending time with my family of course. Getting out of the city and exploring. And checking out other coffee shops!

Some of Her Hoboken + Jersey City Favorites:

What is your favorite restaurant in the area?

Razza. I love their pizzas and their Rosebud cocktail is heavenly!

What is your favorite boutique in the area?

I am obsessed with Roflcopter Toys & Gifts. Having two kids, we are constantly going
to birthday parties every weekend and are always in need of a gift. They carry the best unique toys and we of course love to support our local businesses.

What do you love most about Jersey City?

I love that I can walk to the park, the path train, Newport Mall, and all of the great
restaurants on Newark Ave. Not to mention that we are 5 minutes from the city by
train or car!

What is your favorite thing to do in Hudson County?

I love to explore neighboring towns. We’ll go to Hoboken and Edgewater on the
weekends and check out new shops/restaurants that have recently opened up. And the kids love playing in their local parks.

How long have you lived here?

We moved to Jersey City after we got married. We were starting a family and were
looking for more space. We didn’t want to move to the suburbs and still wanted that
city-feel, while still living in close proximity to NYC. Jersey City had all of that. We’ve
been here for almost 10 years!

What is your favorite outdoor place to spend time?

The kids and I really enjoy Newport Green Park. There’s so many things to keep us all
very occupied: the carousel and outdoor play set with water spray systems for them
and the beach for me. It’s pretty fantastic!

What is your favorite place to work out in Hudson County?

I sadly don’t workout!

Where do you go out with friends in the area?

My friends and I love going to Talde, Porta, Taqueria, Hamilton Pork, and Ani Ramen.
They all have great food, chill vibes and nice outdoor spaces.

What is something you think needs to come to Hoboken or Jersey City?

I would love to see better nail salons, Shake Shack and a Citibank!
