Newark Street Corridor Improvement Project Community Meeting to be Held

newark corridor
On Thursday, February 16th at 7:00PM, Mayor Zimmer is inviting all members of the community to a meeting to discuss proposed safety improvements to Newark Street between Willow Avenue and Jefferson Street. The meeting will take place in the Multi Service Center, located at 124 Grand Street. Challenges along the corridor include the roadway geometry with poor sight lines, wide pedestrian crossings, and high speed turns, frequent illegal parking on sidewalks by buses and trucks, limited pedestrian crossings, lack of bike facilities, and limited permeable surface. The hope is that changes will occur to help make this area safer.

10th and Willow is officially the first bar in Hoboken to achieve the Raise the Bar Anti-Sexual Assault designation. In an effort to increase the safety of patrons, Hudson Speaks is sponsoring Bar Bystander Training sessions for any alcohol-serving establishments, including bars, restaurants and nightclubs. This program addresses an important issue that millions of women have to deal with. About 1 in 6 women will experience sexual assault of some kind in their lifetime and half of the perpetrators will be under the influence of alcohol.  10th and Willow had 100% attendance at their training session and exhibits a strong sense of dedication to the community and knowledge of their responsibility for the safety of their customers. They are open and willing to call the police for a safe transport if the intoxicted patron is unable to get home safely {and a safe car service is unavailable to them}. Way to go 10th and Willow team! If you are interested in your favorite bar getting trained by Bar Bystander Training program, please tell them they should call Anna at 201-418-1004 to schedule a training session.

The January 24th murder of 18-year old Hoboken resident Adrian Rivera was initially thought to be a random act of violence. However, according to an article on NJ.com, Hudson County Prosecutor, Esther Suarez, held a meeting with 100 residents and shared that upon further investigation three pounds of marijuana and nearly $13,000 cash was found in the apartment. The meeting opened up concerns of public housing residents who say they are concerned about potential drug issues in the public housing areas of Hoboken.

A recent article on NJ.com detailed the state’s Government Records Council ruling about Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop’s right to keep his meetings calendar from public view. The decision puts an end to a two year fight started by a reporter at the Jersey Journal who requested to get copy of Fulop’s daily meetings and events. Fulop’s team willing releases the mayor’s public events and appearances, but argues the the other details of the calendar should not be required for public release. In a statement, Jersey Journal Editor Margaret Schmidt said, “In this digital age, it would surely be a simple task to rightly redact elements of the calendar that are strictly private for the mayor and his family or for, say, a constituent with a personal concern. The entirety of the schedule would still provide sunshine for the public to see how their mayor is conducting the city’s business.” Fulop’s team has previously argued that he deserves to have privacy in his personal life.
