The Hoboken Public Library announced the start of its ‘Library of Things’. The Library of Things will feature a collection of borrowable items from museum passes, to clothing, to electronics, and everything in between. This program, led by director Jennie Pu, is already up and running and is available to Hoboken Public Library cardholders.

Hoboken’s Hoot Couture to Close

Hoot Couture, a European children’s clothing store located in the Monroe Center, has announced its closure. In an Instagram post, the team shared, “It’s been a fun ride…but our Hoboken store will be closing at the end of February. Stop by and shop our 40% off SALE. 40% off storewide and up to 70% off select items. You can also shop online with the code FRIENDS40 :).” Hoot Couture is located at 720 Monroe Street, E508, in Hoboken.

When it comes to getting your skincare fix, options are limitless here in the Mile Square. Recently, Hoboken has been having a beauty moment from new salons like BOND to laser treatment removal spots like Laser Away. To add to Hoboken’s lineup of beauty businesses, Glowbar, a skincare chain specializing in facial treatments, is making its way to the neighborhood and taking over the former Deka Lash space at 612 Washington Street. Ribbon Cutting for North Bergen Affordable Senior Housing Complex

North Bergen leaders celebrated the opening of a brand-new apartment building with affordable housing for seniors. The building is located at 6725 Columbia Avenue and has 61 one-bedroom apartments. According to the Hudson County View, the apartments are restricted to low-income residents and amenities will include a large parking lot and doctors’ offices on site.


Luxury Apartment Project Approved in Downtown Hoboken

The building located at 601-619 Newark Street has been approved for the construction of 60 luxury residential units, according to NJBiz.com. This building also houses 4,300 square feet of rooftop space and 4,900 square feet of street-level commercial space equipped to host a restaurant with 2,000 square feet of outdoor seating. The property will feature 35 units — 20 two-bedroom and five three-bedroom units.

A new project will be popping up soon from the team behind the recently-closed Margo Market. According to an Instagram post, the new venture will be called Goldie Jewelry Studio and be located at 1102 Washington Street. The shop will be open from February 22nd and be open through June 2024. It will have a variety of designers, a charm bar, and permanent jewelry in addition to fine, semi-, and demi-fine jewelry.


Protest at Hoboken City Hall

Hudson County residents gathered in Hoboken on Wednesday, February 14th to voice their opinions on the conflict in Gaza. According to TapInto, both sides gathered with signs and megaphones, and the gathering was peaceful.

Over the years, the reputation of Hoboken St. Patrick’s Day has become legendary — albeit somewhat controversial. What was once a day that celebrated a 26-year tradition and hosted NJ’s biggest parade, turned into a day filled with arrests, public drunkenness, and chaos for law enforcement. Some say the celebrations had gotten out of hand, while others miss the Hoboken St. Patty’s Day festivities. Is Primark Still Opening Inside Newport Centre Mall?

The Hoboken Girl can confirm that Primark still plans on opening at the mall. The fashion, home, and beauty brand confirmed via an email sent by a customer service representative. The message read: “We are excited to open our new store in Newport Mall soon. Unfortunately, there is no date set for the opening yet.” Read the full story here


A Peek Inside Jersey City’s Newly-Relaunched Animal Shelter

A lot has happened at the animal shelter located at 235 Jersey City Boulevard since the City of Jersey City took over the space previously run by the Liberty Humane Society. Staff at the shelter are eager to get the word out about their commitment to responding to local animal needs. Arrest Made in 2022 Jersey City Hit + Run

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office announced charges in a December 2022 hit-and-run case. Per a press release, on Tuesday, December 6th, 2022, at approximately 4:35 p.m., the Jersey City Police Department was notified of a pedestrian struck at the Griffith Street and Sherman Avenue intersection. Responding officers found a 36-year-old Jersey City man with serious injuries and he was transported to Jersey City Medical Center for treatment. The striking vehicle did not remain at the scene and was recovered in the days following the collision. On Wednesday, February 14th, 2024, members of the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit arrested 42-year-old Brandon Espinosa of Jersey City in connection with the incident.


The Atrium Apartments Open in Jersey City

According to Jersey Digs, The Atrium apartment building has opened for leasing. Located at 545 Martin Luther King Drive in Jersey City, The Atrium has 36 units with one- and two-bedroom floor plans, with the ground floor of the building occupied by commercial spaces. Some of the amenities available to residents include a dog run, a fitness center, bike storage, and a co-working space.

After sharing information about a proposal that would see a 15% increase in fares, NJ Transit has announced a series of public meetings on the topic. According to a press release from the agency, ten public meetings will be held throughout the state this spring. The Hudson County hearing will be on Friday, March 8th at the Frank Lautenberg Station in Secaucus.

A California-based shop will open a Jersey City location this spring. According to an Instagram post, the team behind Sirena is working on renovating a space in Jersey City. Sirena sells women’s clothing, home goods, accessories, and more.


Liberty State Park Design Task Force Meeting Rescheduled

A meeting to discuss the future redevelopment of Liberty State Park has been rescheduled due to “significant public interest,” per Hudson County View. The meeting is projected to unveil alternatives for potential active recreation, arts, and cultural amenities. The live meeting will take place at 1 Audrey Zapp Drive on March 2nd at 10AM and will also have a virtual livestream where viewers can submit comments to the committee. The committee will take a lunch break at noon and will open the meeting up for public comment at 12:30PM.


Hoboken HS Theatre Department Receives International Recognition

 The theatre department at Hoboken High School has been selected to be featured on the Main Stage of the International Thespian Festival 2024. One of twenty schools to be chosen, HHS is the first school in the State of New Jersey to receive this honor, according to a press release from the school. The troupe will attend the festival from June 23rd to 29th at Indiana University Bloomington in Indiana and will be among over 300 thespian troupes from five different countries and will feature the award-winning school’s production of Into the Woods.


Leasing Opens at Birch House in Jersey City

Birch House, located at 49 Fisk Street, is a 337-unit apartment building located in Jersey City’s West Side, and it is now open for leasing. According to a press release, the building has studio, one-, and two-bedroom floor plans in addition to an on-site fitness center and several spaces for resident relaxation and gathering. The building has a 20,000-square-foot private courtyard for residents and a shuttle to the Journal Square PATH Station.


Cafe Tati, a New Diner-Inspired Eatery, to Open in Hoboken

A vacant storefront that used to house a computer repair shop at the corner of 4th Street and Bloomfield Street in downtown Hoboken won’t be empty for long. The space is home to a new project, Cafe Tati, from the team behind local favorites Barbès, located at 1300 Park Avenue, and La Boheme, located at 233 Clinton Street. $2M Turf Field Coming to Bayonne’s Gregg Park

Baseball season is upon us and The Hudson County Board of Commissioners approved the $2M project through a contract with Athletic Fields of America, per NJ.com. The field will be located near the basketball courts and will be a full-sized, Major League dimension field (60/90) which will be used for the freshman and junior varsity Bayonne High School teams as well as local youth and adult league teams. The construction will also include new dugouts with benches, bat and helmet racks, a new backstop and fencing, enclosed bullpens, and foul poles.


Hoboken’s Maritime Park Priced at $74.5M

The City of Hoboken’s proposed redevelopment plan for the former Union Dry Dock site and existing Castle Point Terrace Skate Park will be transformed into a new and expanded skate park, flexible lawn area, natural playground, community building, plazas, learning and maritime piers, expanded beach, and tidal marsh, while also incorporating ecological enhancements and coastal resiliency. According to the Hudson County View, The construction of this project is expected to cost approximately $74.5M, of which $69.9M will go towards construction costs. This does not include a $4.7M bridge connecting Elysian Park. The concept design was approved at last week’s city council meeting.

Cafe Bello posted a photo this week of rapper Waka Flocka Flame, who recently visited this Hudson County eatery, located at 1044 Avenue C in Bayonne. “It’s no surprise our best seller was also a hit with this special guest. To end the meal, an Italian espresso to get his evening started. Shrimp vodka pizza was so good he almost ‘ate it with no hands!’” shared the restaurant on Instagram.


Maroons Creamery Nears Opening in Hoboken

Earlier this year, The Hoboken Girl reported on a new ice cream shop coming to uptown Hoboken at 1122 Washington Street. At the time, New Jersey-based ice cream shop Surreal Creamery had announced plans for the space. Now, we know for sure that a different ice cream shop called Maroons Creamery will be opening in the space — and more progress has been made on the signage recently. Maroons Creamery specializes in homemade flavors, such as guava cheesecake, custard apple, and raspberry doughnuts, and has a ‘build-your-own’ ice cream concept. NJ Mandates Disaster Plan for Bayonne Hospital, Financial Distress Concerns Arise

New Jersey State Authorities have mandated the implementation of a disaster plan for Bayonne Hospital, stating there are concerns over the risk of closure due to CarePoint Health’s financial distress. Per NJ.com,  the disaster plan will include procedures that would take place if the hospital would need to close, including where to evacuate or relocate patients.


Mixed-Use Development Proposed For Southwest Hoboken

The triangle piece of property located at the fork in the road by Observer Highway, Jackson Street, and Paterson Avenue, formerly G.Millz Boken Roadhouse (and previously Jack’s Tavern) is being proposed as a seven-story multi-purpose building. As shared on Jersey Digs, the plan calls for a five-story building with condominiums, each having a private planted outdoor terrace space or roof deck, and commercial space in the former restaurant’s footprint. The current plan is still pending planning board approval although additional and separate developments of Southwest Park are currently underway.

Alfalfa, a born-in-Hoboken salad spot, well-known for its salads, wraps, breakfast burritos, and homemade gluten-free doughnuts, announced Monday the opening of its fifth store. The restaurant has charmed salad lovers on the East and West Coasts since its first restaurant opened in 2019 at 1110 Washington Street in Hoboken. Alfalfa will open its fifth location in the former Sobseys Produce grocery store at 92 Bloomfield Street in Hoboken — back where it all began.
