Harborside Sport + Spine

After his inauguration on Monday, Mayor Bhalla designated the City of Hoboken as a Fair and Welcoming City as his first executive order. Bhalla cites that the order is “intended to reflect the values of our country and the belief that we are all equal and entitled to dignity and respect,” and that he signs such into effect with the support of Police Chief Kenneth Ferrante and local community leaders. The order is also intended to provide qual protection under the law irrespective of immigration status, as well as religion, nationality, ethnicity, or sexual orientation. As a result, the Hoboken Police Department will not spend resources enforcing civil immigration law, unless required by state/federal law or a court order.

Flatbread Grill announced last week on social media that they are now a franchise. In addition to this momentous milestone, co-founder Gonca Esendemir and her sisters are the first Turkish-American women to found and expand a fast-casual restaurant concept into a global franchise. Flatbread Grill, located 517 Washington, eatures platters of grilled meat and veggies, pita pockets, melts, salads, and smoothie options and plans to expand the menu at their new locations. The Jersey City restaurant is set to open in early April, and the sisters look forward to announcing the next location {hint: it’s in one of the area’s biggest entertainment mall projects} in the coming months.

As reported by Mayor Fulop on Instagram, a fire began in the Caven Point area of Jersey City during Thursday’s snow storm. The JCFD was assisting in snow removal efforts at the time, and was dispatched to the area in the early afternoon. Reports state that the blaze was started by Reliable Recycling. The recycling center will be facing a fine of $16,000 and a 60-day shut down. No injuries or fatalities have been reported.

Vintage on First Opens Permanent Shop

Vintage on First is officially open for business in their new location! The shop, which fell victim to a terrible real estate scam last year, struggled to find a permanent home in Hoboken, but then luckily found a temporary one down the block on First. Owner Mark Rosado recounted that there were times in which they were unsure whether they would be in business the next month. Luckily, Vintage on First has signed a long-term lease at 257 First Street and has been open there since January 2nd. Congrats guys — can’t wait to stop by!

Hudson Tunnel Plan Put on Hold by Trump Administration

Construction of the new rail tunnel under the Hudson River, also known as “The Gateway Project,” has been halted by the Trump administration. The route was set to go from New York City under the Hudson River, thru Hoboken, Weehawken, and the Palisades, and then connect with the train station in Secaucus. Under President Barack Obama, the federal government agreed to pay half the total cost as long as New York and New Jersey agreed to split the remainder. Despite the fact that it appeared that the project was moving forward, a letter was issued to both states from Federal Transit Administration deputy administrator, K. Jane Williams, stating that no agreement between the states appeared to exist. At this time it is unclear if the Federal Transit Administration is requiring local officials to renegotiate the Hudson Tunnel project with the government or if the project is, in fact, canceled.

Using the mobile app FourSquare and its check-in capabilities, the app ranked the top dining spots in NJ using a proprietary algorithm. The algorithm assigned a particular rating to each location based on user activity including likes/dislikes, tip sentiment, and more. Favorites included Taqueria Downtown, Talde, and Porta clinching the #1 spot. Kudos, JC.

Severe Temperatures Cause Issues for Hoboken Pipes

According to Patch, pipes have been bursting all over Hoboken due to dropping temperatures over the past week. A senior building on 1st Street and a water main break on 9th Street between Monroe and Madison streets are just two incidents of the widespread trouble — with another happening on 2nd and Park during winter storm Grayson. The Hoboken Fire Department issued an advisory stating, “severe weather is causing pipes to burst…residents should call 911 or the HFD at 201-420-2004 in the event of a burst pipe, especially if there is any hazard such as wet electric fixtures or damaged smoke detectors.” To minimize the chance of damage, residents should
maintain heat in homes at all times and leave faucets dripping.

Mayor Fulop Announces Plans for a Lawsuit Against “Millionaire’s Marina”

Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, along with local officials and advocates announced a lawsuit against Suntex’s proposal to build a “Millionaire’s Marina” at Liberty State Park, reports Hudson County View. The announcement was coupled with reports from several environmental activists who cited the environmental impact that will be suffered should plans for the marina move forward. Leaders state that the decision to approve the marina was decided too quickly and that the DEP and the Christie administration didn’t perform the appropriate studies needed to ensure that there would be no negative impact both to Jersey City and the greater community that uses the park. Following Fulop’s announcement, Suntex Senior Vice President Ron TenEyck stated that they were not aware of the city’s lawsuit until Wednesday and wishes that they had had the opportunity to participate in person at the hearing yesterday to argue on behalf of Suntex. Further discussion is scheduled for January 16th.

In case you’re unfamiliar with the Drybar experience, here are some things you can look forward too: you get a menu of blowout styles {personal fave is the Mahattan}, at the “bar” rom coms are usually playing and you are served champagne, and you leave with perfect salon hair all for around $40. Until more details regrading the location and timing of the Hoboken salon are released, be sure to check out one of the many amazing salons already in the Mile Square!
