Hobbs Inc

On Thursday night, a NJ transit train carrying 180 passengers and crew derailed at Penn Station.  This was considered a minor, slow speed derailment, and thankfully no one was hurt. Regular service resumed Friday morning, but commuters are anticipating other delays due to track repairs that may start this week.

Jersey City Schools Prepare to Regain Local Control

The State Board of Education and the Christie administration are likely returning full control of local schools to Jersey City. The district passed the state’s latest review, which means the Board must vote on whether to return control of instruction to the district. This is the final phase of the process, and the resolution is expected to pass. If it does, the district will be required to develop a transition plan, and will be monitored by the state. “Jersey City Mayor, Steven Fulop, has said, “Local control is not the end, but another step along the way in ensuring that our schools continue to improve and that all students throughout the city are provided the quality education they deserve.”

Hoboken Passes 500-Foot Rule {and Approved 1st Steps for Free Wifi Citywide}

This week, the City Council passed two pieces of legislation amending the “500 foot rule,” which in the past prevented bars or restaurants that served alcohol from opening within 500 feet of an existing establishment. Per NJ.com, the rule was adopted in 1966 “to prevent Hoboken from becoming a Northeast version of San Francisco’s wild waterfront district known as the Barbary Coast.” It was repealed in 1987, and then was reinstated in 1991. Councilwoman Jen Giattino posted on her Facebook page in support of the legislation which lifts the rule, sharing that it would “allow more neighborhoods, including the redevelopment areas around our new parks, the opportunity to have restaurants.” She also stated that the city has approved the initial steps required to bring free high-speed Wi-Fi to all of Hoboken {yassss!}. Hmag reported that this will not grant more liquor licenses, but it does allow those with liquor licenses to have more flexibility in where they set up shop with their business in the Mile Square. The vote to amend the rule passed 6-1, with 2 councilpersons absent from the vote.

Bloomsbury Square is Moving

Bloomsbury Square, the awesome Jersey City shop that sells small batch vegan skincare, is relocating. Don’t worry, they’re not leaving town. They’re just moving the store and bloomBar to a new JC location. They will have to close their 942 Summit store on August 5th in order to get their new digs ready, but will be having a last bash that day.

Feministival, a series of events for and by women, is taking place in Jersey City this summer.  They’re being held the second Friday of each month {July 14, Aug 11, and Sept 8} at Hamilton Park from 3 pm to 8 pm. They will feature free fun and entertainment for both kids and adults alike, including music and food, plus bubbles and crafts for children. The Feministival series serves to empower, showcase and promote local businesses owned and operated by women. Stop by to support local female artists, fashion designers, healthcare providers, educators and other entrepreneurs.

Modern Sage Store Closing in August

modern-sage-jersey-city-boutique

We’re sad to report that the Modern Sage store in Jersey City will be closing August 30. Luckily, the shop’s owner, Leah Guy, is still selling her products online and you can find her book, The Fearless Path, on Amazon or at Barnes and Noble.  If you haven’t been there yet, you still have time to check out some of the cool things she’s offering. There are plenty of workshops, meditations, and readings the next 8 weeks — plus a jewelry workshop. You can also stop in for a healing session or massage, or just browse and find some goodies aka crystals, sage, and other fun stuff. We wish Leah lots of happiness in her next endeavor!

CASA Night Taking Place at Pier 13

On Friday, July 14, CASA {Court Appointed Special Advocates} Charity for Children is hosting a party at Pier 13. The event will benefit foster children in Hudson County, and celebrate CASA volunteers. The event is taking place between 5pm and 10pm, so stop by for food, drinks, and a good view. If you can’t make it, you can still donate by visiting the CASA website. HobokenGirl.com is a proud sponsor of the CASA mission and sponsored a student’s summer to camp this year.

 Historic Spot in the Heights Reopens After Hurricane Sandy

When Hurricane Sandy hit in 2012, one of the things it damaged was the 100-year-old gazebo in Jersey City Heights which offers panoramic views of Hoboken and the NYC skyline. Recently, after being closed for five years, Jersey City celebrated a ribbon cutting for a new and improved gazebo where the old one stood. The Riverview Neighborhood Association, and the Jersey City Parks Coalition, worked with neighborhood residents to determine the new design while adhering to historic preservation standards.  Visit Riverview-Fisk Park to check out the views {we hear it’s a great spot for selfies!}.

Ramen House Under Construction in JC

Menya Sandaime, a Japanese Ramen House, is coming to Jersey City’s Newport neighborhood. The owners currently have one Menya Sandaime restaurant in Fort Lee, which has been in business since 2014. At the new site, construction permits were posted in May and official signage went up last weekend. In addition to their homemade ramen, they serve other dishes like Gyoza pork dumplings, Butadon, and Gyudon. They won’t be opening for a while, but if you’re a ramen fan, you can check out Ani Ramen while you wait — read about our latest visit here.
