During the next spring storm, pay attention to how nature is responding. Look to the trees, the wind, the earth. Often times, the wind is howling causing leaves to rustle and fall, all while the branches are thrust around.
People tend to be swept up in the drama of a storm, causing the true calmness of a tree to go unnoticed. Unlike its parts, the tree trunk stays solid, strong, and quiet. Rooted in the ground, while sometimes bending with the wind it is ultimately unmoved, anchored in place.
To me, as a mental health professional, staying grounded means being present-focused, or paying attention on purpose. Perhaps the cliché saying that “you cannot control the water, but you can learn to surf” has some deep life lessons to teach. Like a thunderstorm, life can be scary, chaotic, and unpredictable. It is easy to feel swept away by situations in one’s life, taken on an emotional roller coaster of ups and downs like the leaves flying around in the wind but there’s hope in knowing that one can become more like a tree, grounded and sturdy.
Some ways that our team at Growing Mindset Therapy teaches our clients to come back to the present moment is through getting creative, spending time in nature, listening to music, and by interacting with others. We’ve rounded up some local spots to help you stay grounded, pay attention on purpose, and even bloom this spring locally.
