The First Baptist Church building, located at 903 Bloomfield Street, will soon be reconstructed to house six condos. According to an article on Jersey Digs, the church ran services as recently as 2013 and was then sold to an investor who intended to turn it into condos. The majority of the structure will be restored but the “conversion will see the removal of the building’s current roof in favor of a new Mansard-style one that’s shorter but wider, adding a fifth floor to the structure that will be topped with gray-colored zinc.” There will be two 2-bedroom units, two 3-bedroom units, and two 4-bedroom units.

Mayor Zimmer Asks That Pier A Construction Move Forward

At a recent City Council meeting, Mayor Zimmer made a statement regarding the need to repair the substructure of Pier A. In her statement, she relayed that Pier A was constructed by the Port Authority and that due to possible construction issues, repairs need to be made to over 1,000 steel pilings that hold up the pier. Mayor Zimmer went on to discuss that funding “for the maintenance of Pier A and the waterfront are provided by an account established by a 1994 agreement between the Port Authority and the City… That account now receives $1 million annually from the developers as part of the obligation of the developers to ‘give back’ to the community in exchange for the development rights that were provided in Hoboken.” Despite the fact that over the years money has been put into the account but not spent, there is still disagreement on how to fund the repairs. Mayor Zimmer stated the the Port Authority representative “on the Board has failed to attend multiple meetings and failed to participate in many meetings when present.  This action has caused a stalemate so that the Board has not been able to come to a final decision on the funding of the repairs.” Mayor Zimmer asked the City Council to support the resolutions to fund and begin repairs to Pier A so that it is fully repaired and can be used by residents, visitors, and businesses in the community. She stated she’ll continue to work to get the Port Authority to agree to pay for the repairs.
