Pavana Yoga to Open on 1st Street

Hoboken’s newest yoga studio, Pavana Yogawill host it’s opening celebration the weekend of July 15th. The non-hot studio, located at 251 1st Street {formerly The Salon by Soondar Secrets} will offer a variety of yoga styles including vinyasa, hatha, and restorative yoga, among others. Owner and instructor Danielle Maoli has had dreams of owning a studio since high-school and is beyond excited to bring this new community to Hoboken. We got a sneak peek of the new spot and can assure you it will definitely help you find your zen — it’s sooo pretty! Make sure to stop and try out a class and stay up to date with all details of their opening on Facebook and Instagram.

Hoboken Approves 7th and Jackson Resiliency Park

This past week, the Hoboken City Council voted 7-2 in favor of the redevelopment for a construction project at 7th and Jackson street. The project includes a new two acre park, public gymnasium, affordable housing, and flood resiliency measures. According to Mayor Zimmer, the new gym and park will be constructed first, about 18-24 months after final approvals take place. Click here for more information about the project. 

Stevens Students to Host Let’s Help Hoboken

The newly created Stevens Venture Center of Stevens Institute of Technology is sponsoring a “hackathon” to help Hoboken. Hackathons are collaborations between computer programmers, designers, and creatives to help solve problems and honor new ideas. The weekend-long even will take place on July 16h and 17th where students will work to help Hoboken by building new web services that tackle local challenges. Hoboken residents are invited to submit ideas for web service projects and 10 teams of student-hackers will choose projects from the submitted ideas. Visit their Facebook Page to get in touch.

Local Author to Hold Book Signing Event

Local author and July 2015’s Hoboken Girl of the Week, Savannah Atkinson, will host a book signing to celebrate the release of her newest book, Surface TensionThe young-adult novel is the second in her series Siren Anthology, which combines the hidden, immersive world of Harry Potter and the underwater adventures of The Little Mermaid. The event will take place on Sunday, July 17th from 4-6:00PM at Word, located at 123 Newark Avenue in Jersey City.

Dual Art Exhibition to Feature Local Photographer

On July 12th a reception party will be held to celebrate a dual art exhibition that will feature the work of Jaz Graf and local photograph Victoria Miritello. The show will be on display all month in the Rotunda Gallery and Jersey City City Hall and will feature black and what abstract photograph and mix media. Victoria specializes in abstract photograph, mostly featuring photos taken in the Hoboken/Jersey City Area. All work will be available for sale.

The Amy Winehouse Engagement Coming to Maxwell’s

On July 15th Maxwell’s will host The Amy Winehouse Engagement, where a 12-piece orchestra made up of local musicians will honor the late artist with a songlist from Winehouse’s career. The intention is not only to provide an evening of entertainment, but to educate audiences on Winehouse’s talent. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 the day of the show. Park Ave Bridge Construction to Impact Traffic

As of July 5th, construction has begun on the Park Avenue bridge in North Hoboken. The country decided that during construction the bridge will be a one-way southbound road, leaving the Willow Ave bridge as the only northbound route out of Hoboken. Officials are advising drives to “plan for significant traffic delays, consider alternate routes, adjust work hours or telecommute if possible, use public transportation, and provide extra travel time.” It expected that traffic will increase, especially during the morning rush hour. Mayor Zimmer requested that the Country evaluate traffic impact during the first weeks of construct to see if changes or a detour plan are needed. Hoboken residents can provide feedback to County Executive DeGise, Freeholder Romano, Mayor Zimmer, and 2nd War Councilwoman Tiffanie Fisher. Now, however, the bridge work has come to a hault and is open for business. See below:

 

 

Groundbreaking on Hoboken’s Southwest Park

On June 30th, Hoboken officials broke ground on Southwest Park, the new one acre property at the corner of Jackson Street and Observer highway. The park will integrate green infrastructure to reduce flooding. According to the park’s webpage, it will also include recreational space, a dog run, restrooms, moveable cafe tables, a pop-up market area, child-friendly park activities, public wifi {love!}, and multi-level seating for performances.

Cantigas Women’s Choir Makes International Debut

Hudson County’s Cantigas Women’s Choir has made their international debut in Argentina. The 14-year-old group is composed of 50 women of all ages and backgrounds who perform a broad spectrum of global music. 30 singers from the Hoboken/Jersey City area performed a solo concert at Primera Iglesia Metodista de Buenos Aires on July 5th and at a choral festival with some of Argentina’s most prestigious choirs at Iglesia San Carlos on July 7th.  The trip comes as the culmination of a seven year relationship in which Cantigas has hosted Argentine choirs in Hoboken. Congrats to these local ladies on this huge accomplishment!

Jersey City Veggie Burgers Coming to A Store Near You

A farmer’s market favorite, Jersey City Veggie Burgersis making a move to the retail food scene in order to keep up with demand. The award-winning veggie burgers are already on sale in a number of grocery stores and restaurants throughout New Jersey including P&K Market and Left Bank Burger Bar in Jersey City and Organic Basic Foods in Hoboken. For their final market-season, JCVB will be available at the Riverview Farms Marketing in Jersey City on the first and third Sunday of each month.
