New Recreational Pier Opens in Weehawken

unspecified

The $3.1 million Weehawken Recreational Pier, designed by McLaren Engineering Group in collaboration with RSC Architectsk is officially open. The project, which has been in the works for 15 years, stretches nearly 500 feet into the Hudson River, directly opposite the Empire State Building. The pier boasts five pods connected by 10-foot-wide walkways, each designed for a specific use. A kayak pod offers launch space for kayakers, and a raised hexagonal pod creates an ideal area for viewing the city and the surrounding waterfront. Additional pods are designed for fishing and educational visits. The pods range in size from 700 to 2,500 square feet. The new Weehawken Recreation Pier replaces a structure that had been destroyed in 1993 and is located northeast of the intersection of Washington Terrace and Harbor Boulevard. It borders a two-acre waterfront park.

We don’t always hear of positive outcomes in missing persons cases, but we’re glad to say this one goes against the mold. Shirlene Quigley, a North Bergen resident who is a professional dancer and used to be an instructor at Local Barre, was reported missing earlier this week. Stars including Rhianna and Missy Elliot, both of whom Quigley has been a back-up dancer for, posted about her disappearance in an effort to bring her home safely. Thankfully, hours after announcing her disappearance authorities released a statement saying that she was safe and at a medical facility. No word yet on exactly what happened, but we’re sooo glad to hear she has been reunited with her family.

Starting on October 30th at 9:00PM, Hudson County will resume construction on the Park Avenue bridge between Hoboken and Weehawken. Construction had been suspended due to an executive order from Governor Christie related to the Transportation Trust Fund. Work is planned to take place Sunday to Thursday nights from 8:00PM to 6:00AM and Friday nights from 10:00PM to 8:00AM in order to allow for the later traffic flow out of Hoboken. The Park Avenue bridge will be closed to traffic in both directions during construction hours.  The County will also begin construction on Sinatra Drive North between 14th Street and 15th Street which will close parts of Sinatra while construction is underway.
