Pediatric cancer survivor {and mini Mile Square resident} Satya broke records as the youngest-ever Hoboken Girl of the Week when the four-year-old was featured on our site back in April. Now, Satya is raising the bar even higher — her most recent gig being an appearance on the talk show Kathie Lee & Hoda. With her mother Raakhee Mirchandani in tow, Satya visited the morning show to promote her mother’s recently-released children’s book, Super Satya Saves the Day, in which Satya herself is the star.

In her first year of life, Satya was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a pediatric cancer that typically targets children under five. Doctors located a tumor in Satya’s abdomen and she underwent intensive treatment and a six-hour surgery in order to remove it. Now, Satya is cancer-free and the inspiration behind her New York Daily News-editor mama’s foray into kids’ books.

The premise of the book goes as such: Super Satya is ready to have a super day, including finally conquering the tallest slide in Hoboken. But her day takes a not-so-super turn when she realizes her superhero cape is stuck at the dry cleaner. Will she be able to face her fears, help her friends and be the true hero everyone knows she is? Super Satya Saves The Day, introducing Satya, a precocious Indian-American superhero, written by Raakhee Mirchandani, illustrated by Tim Palin and published by Bharat Babies is now in bookstores and available on Amazon here.

Police Chief of Hoboken Releases Yearly Stats Based on Crime Index

The crime index describes the number of crimes in a specific location per 1,000 residents. Police Chief Ken Ferrante released the numbers for the first three-quarters of the year 2018, proudly highlighting on Twitter that crime in Hoboken is down in nine main categories. Though crime is considered “up” in three categories, based on the 13 main categories of the Uniform Crime Reporting System, it is also stable in one. “We are down 100% in Homicide, 50% in Rape, 18% in Larceny, and 14% in Non-Violent Crime,” Ferrante tweeted.

He continued, “The crime index (crimes per 1000 residents) is down 12.2% and the Violent Crime Index is down 1.1%. There are only 1.84 violent crimes per 1000 residents which is a remarkable number for a city, a city that is the 4th most densely populated in the country!”

Ferrante concluded the announcement by extending a sincere thanks to all the officers who serve Hoboken on the daily. “Thanks to every member of @HobokenPD for your work every day, & kudos to excellent work you performed in September. September, which is historically 1 of our busiest months of the year (sic) saw @CityofHoboken have no homicides, no rapes, only 1 robbery, only 4 car thefts & 7 burglaries!” he added.

Martin Scorsese Film ‘Joker’ Currently Filming in Jersey City

The Jersey City courthouse {and the street surrounding it} was the setting for a high-profile film over the weekend. Joker, a movie from filmmaker Todd Phillips, produced by Martin Scorsese and starring Joaquin Phoenix as the titular character and Robert De Niro, is the origin story of the villain who goes by the name Joker in the Batman comics. Set to hit theaters in October 2019, production had filming permits in the streets of Jersey City until Monday, October 1.

Though strict non-disclosure agreements kept many of the members of production tight-lipped, it appears that the Jersey City-shot scene may depict a staged news conference and protest. A person who works in the Locations department for the film and who declined to be identified revealed to NJ.com that the Brennan courthouse “just has the look” to make the scene work.

The particular scene shot outside the courthouse may take place during the 1970s as prop police cruisers with similar styles to the Plymouth Belvedere Pursuit, a cop car popular during the decade. Fake prop garbage was also piled on the curb for the purposes of the scene in Gotham — uh, Jersey City.

Ani Ramen House‘s 3rd Annual Slurp. Sip. Repeat. Ramen-Eating Contest went down yesterday, October 6, and if you were even remotely close to the contestants, chances are you got splashed with some ramen-soup residue {there was a lot of slurping involved!}. The winner took home the high honor of first place and won a celebratory all-inclusive chef’s tasting dinner for 10 people at Ani Ramen’s, a $1,000 value, and free ramen for a year. Money raised by donations for the event benefited No Kid Hungry, a national campaign run by the non-profit Share Our Strength that strives to solve hunger and poverty issues around the world and ultimately put an end to childhood hunger worldwide.

Puppy-friendly slide and all. Dog mamas and papas in Jersey City have a reason to celebrate: the opening and ribbon-cutting of a brand new Harborside dog park in Jersey City. Chief Executive Officer of Mack-Cali Realty Corporation, Michael J. DeMarco, and Councilpersons from Jersey City was in attendance on Thursday, October 4 to witness the grand opening of the community dog park in downtown JC. Mack-Cali is the sponsor behind the dog park addition located at 185 Hudson Street, directly adjacent to Harborside 5.

“We’re thrilled to have had the opportunity to add another beautiful public green space to the Harborside neighborhood that will benefit the community for years to come,” DeMarco said. “Creating family-friendly and pet-friendly areas within the city is something that I personally am passionate about, and we’ve already received a great deal of positive feedback from local residents who are very excited to use the new space regularly.”

Mack-Cali is also responsible for last year’s opening of Lutze Biergarten, an outdoor venue that offers craft beers and cocktails, and Piggyback Bar at Harborside, a restaurant owned by famed chef Leah Cohen and partner Ben Byruch. These recent developments and openings are all part of Mack-Cali’s long-term plans to transform Harborside into “a one-of-a-kind cultural district” that’s “vibrant and well-connected.”

Happy playing, pups!
