Confession time: we love a good excuse to get all glammed up, but sometimes the whole process can feel a liiiittle overwhelming. From finding the perfect outfit to getting your hair to hold a soft wave an entire night — all of it can be a bit daunting. So how can you look your best, feel amazing, and have selfie-worthy makeup without breaking the bank? We’ve got you covered on how to do formal prep like a pro, from head to toe — literallyLuckily for us here in the Mile Square, we’ve got plenty of pros who can style you just right, but here’s just a few tips and suggestions to get you started from your friends at Hoboken Girl.

Prep #1: Grab a Gown

As a general rule of thumb, it’s always easier to come up with the right makeup look after you have your outfit established. And with boutiques scattered along Washington, you’re sure to find something that will wow. Places like Mint Market and Alba Boutique are a pretty solid choice for starters.

Prep #2: Skin is {Always} In

Hobbs Inc

When it comes to any special event where you know you’ll be photographed, having a smooth, even canvas {in this case, we’re talking about your skin} is top priority. Luckily, we’ve got a plethora of skincare experts right here in Hoboken who can help you put your best face forward by booking a facial a few weeks in advance of your big night. We’re big fans of E.C. Beauty Studio’s “The You” Facial, which is designed specifically for your needs.

Looking for some affordable products to enhance that glowing skin? Maybelline Matte & Poreless is one of our favorite foundations, and costs under $10 at the drugstore. Its mattifying properties help keep shine at bay and blurs the appearance of pores, making your skin look like porcelain. More of a glow-getter, you say? Try the Dewy + Smooth version instead for a more luminous finish. And in case you haven’t heard, IT Cosmetics {based in JC!} is pretty much nailing it with their foundations and tinted moisturizer.

Prep #3: Get Your Bronze On

Dusting bronzer onto the hollows of your cheekbones and around the perimeter of your face will not only give you that “just got back from vacation” glow, but will also give your face a slightly contoured look, allowing your features to really pop. Milani’s Baked Bronzer is perfect if you’re looking for a tan with shimmer, but try NYC’s Color Smooth Skin Bronzing Face Powder in “Sunny” if you want a matte, natural finish.

If you’re feeling committed to an all-over glow, a spray tan is your best option. Glow + Co. is a mobile service which provides organic spray tans right in the comfort of your own living room, along with Beyond Bronze, Glow Me NJ, and more.

Prep #4: A Little Lipstick Never Hurts

^ DKM Cosmetics is now based out of Secaucus, aka worth the drive from the Mile Square for any makeup + hair needs

Wearing your favorite shade of lipstick or gloss can pull a whole look together in a quick swipe. Nude lipstick goes with virtually any eye look, so find that “your lips, but better” shade to see everything come together. Alternatively, a bold color is always a fun choice, especially if your outfit is more on the subtle side. {Bonus: red lipstick automatically makes teeth look whiter and brighter!} Definitely visit places like Up & Out or Tre Chique who offer makeup services for a professional, fresh look.

Prep #5: Nailing it

With approximately 700 nail salons on every block in Hoboken, it’s easy for you to hop in a chair, pick your fav color, and make your Pinterested nail art dreams come true. Try a bold color if you’re going with an understated dress, but maybe opt for a pretty neutral if your dress is in a print or loud hue. No money? No problem. Essie Gel Couture polish {which lasts longer than regular polish but is less harsh than gel} is sold in stores {it’s the funky looking twisty bottle}, and is totally DIY for a perfect “polished” look — and don’t forget your toes.

Prep #6: Ooh-La-Lashes

There’s nothing like long lashes — or at least the illusion of long lashes — to awaken your face and make you feel like a million bucks. Grab your favorite mascara {we’re big fans of layering volumizing and lengthening mascaras for a dramatic look} or throw on a set of falsies {Ardell Demi Wispies are our go-to style} for instant va-va-voom. But if you need help, here are 6 Places to Get Eyelash Extensions in Hoboken.

Now that you have your beauty prep checklist, here comes the fun part: practicing! We suggest a “trial run” of your makeup look so you can make sure it fits your personality, style, and lasts all night. Thankfully, there is a YouTube tutorial for just about any look you can imagine, so if you’re not sure where to start, just search “smokey eye” or “classic Hollywood makeup” {or whatever look you’re after} and prepare to become a pro in no time. And if you’re wondering where to find the best beauty products in town, here are three of our favorite spots.
