Sorry to the New Year’s resolutioners, but lets be serious, it’s time to discuss . If you’re not a baker by nature, the thought of firing up the oven to bake a batch of cookies prob gets your heart racing in a flustered panic. So to help with that anxiety and let that oven hibernate this winter season, and here are four Jersey City bakeries you must visit {because they’re awesome}.

Cocoa Bakery {275 Grand Street}

First on our list is Cocoa Bakery, located in downtown Jersey City, which is a sweet tooth’s dream come true. Since 2012, owner Jessica Isaacs has been baking up sweet and savory treats for the JC community and the surrounding area. Exuding a warm and welcoming feel, the shop is chock full of vintage furniture and rustic touches, including reclaimed wood countertops, shelves, tables, and more. The baked goods on display all look great, but the cake truffles are AMAZING.

Whether you’re looking to grab some treats to go, need a custom cake, or you just want to catch up with your friends over a yummy snack and a cup-of-joe, Cocoa Bakery has all of your sweet treat needs covered {in sugar}!

Hobbs Inc

Prato Bakery {61 Erie Street}

Just a few short blocks from the Grove Street PATH station, Prato Bakery immediately takes you back to a small village in Italy, with the smell of fresh bread, fine coffee, and the sounds of happy {and regular} customers. Prato is not your average bakery — all of the staff are from Italy, and they’re excited to share their Tuscan-inspired food with their customers {though they’re not likely to give you the secret recipe to their famous Cantucci aka biscotti!}.

If you’re not looking to fill up on “Tuscan bread,” also known as Italian croissants filled with Nutella or jam, Prato offers non-sweet food items, like focaccia and prosciutto sandwiches and savory pizzas, all of which smell delicious as they’re being taken out of the industrial-sized pizza ovens in the back of the shop. Next time you’re in JC, don’t miss this little slice of Italian paradise.

Dulce de Leche {376 Central Avenue}

A new addition to Jersey City Heights, Dulce de Leche’s Argentine baked goods have been at hit in West New York, NJ, since 2007, which is why this second location officially opened its new doors in September of this year {which you may remember us sharing about here}. The bakery and café is owned by the Urgilles fam — a family of four with a passion for Argentinian food and culture.

With countless cakes, desserts, and custards made daily in the shop, it’s hard to choose just one treat to taste, but their classic Argentine churro (offered plain, filled, or dipped in chocolate) is absolutely worth nibbling on. If you’re looking to try something outside of the sweet-zone, the café offers empanadas and tartas (Argentine-style quiches) that can easily warm you up on a cold winter’s day.

Monteleone’s Bakery {741 Newark Avenue}

You know it’s old school and delicious when it’s been running for 60 years and doesn’t even have a website. Family-owned and operated since 1946, Monteleone’s Bakery has been a staple of the Jersey City community, 7 days a week for over 60 years. The definition of a down-home-Italian bakery, you can walk away from Monteleone’s with a box full of pastries having spent less than $10.

The shop is small and heavily trafficked, which makes for an intimate checkout setting, but any friendly elbow touching is #worthit for the custard-filled cookies, small and large cakes, pies, cannolis, and so much more.

The shop is filled with so many baked goods, it’s easy to miss some of the freshest treats located right behind the counter. Don’t be afraid to ask the shop staff for guidance — they’re fast, informed, and willing to help. And just as an FYI, the bakery is cash only, so make sure to hit the ATM before you swing by!
