The Bergen-Lafayette area of Jersey City was starving for some vegan fare, and family-owned Pinwheel Garden answered the call. Brothers Steve and Albert Tseng opened this grass-roots dumpling and noodle place last year with the community in mind, and it really shows. Pinwheel Garden’s focus is on quality ingredients that are accessible to all — in a super cozy environment. While this spot isn’t 100% vegan, the plant-based items they do have on the menu are seriously on-point. {BYOB is also encouraged, which is always a plus.} Read on to learn more about this JC gem, located at 318 Communipaw Avenue in the Bergen Lafayette section of Jersey City:

The Dumplings

While new vegan specials are constantly being introduced, there are a few staple vegan dishes currently on the menu. Already becoming known for their amazing dumplings, Pinwheel Garden always keeps a vegan dumpling on the menu.

The Spinach Pie Dumplings {pictured below} are filled with herbaceous Mediterranean spinach, parsley, dill, and nutmeg. Another mainstay vegan appetizer is the Scallion Pancake and the Scallion Pancake “Pizza” {topped with veggie bolognese}.

The Veggie Bolognese is a main dish, consisting of lightly-spiced organic tofu and pea protein, peppers, fresh Campari marinara and pinot noir over udon noodles. Another popular vegan main dish is the Coconut Curry {Indian-spiced coconut milk curry with organic tofu, peppers, onions, cilantro over udon noodles or rice}. You can add divine mushroom seitan to the curry dish as well.

Wild Ramp and Mushroom Dumplings — oyster, crimini, beech, king oyster and shitake mushrooms.

Other Eats

All of the noodles and dumplings are made in-house. Udon noodles are thick, chewy wheat noodles great for soups, sauce or curry dishes. Important to note: their ramen noodles contain egg, thus not suitable for vegans. But still delish.

Pinwheel also has an impressive tea selection. Blueberry Meyer Lemon tea {blueberry, elderberry, hibiscus and Meyer lemon iced tea} is a crowd-pleaser and a variety of hot teas {chamomile rose, black tea, earl grey, genmaicha, Indonesian jasmine, Indian chai, mint or blueberry} are offered as well. All in all, great vibes, and such a gem in the Bergen-Lafayette section of JC.
