Calling all yogis — yes, there are many yoga studios in our area, and you might already have a spot you’re super dedicated to. However, it’s always exciting to give a new place a try. Jivamukti Yoga {located on 171 Newark Avenue in Jersey City} is known for its cult celebrity following — {think Russell Simmons, Michael Franti, and even Uma Thurman’s brother is a Jivamukti teacher}. So it was very exciting when Austin Sanderson and Bob Hranichny {partners of 18 years} decided to open a center right in Jersey City five years ago. Read on to learn all about this yoga studio and what makes it unique:

    The Jivamukti Yoga Method:

The Jivamukti Yoga method is a proprietary style of yoga created by David Life and Sharon Gannon in 1984. Jivamukti is a physical, ethical, and spiritual practice, combining a vigorous hatha yoga, vinyasa-based physical style with adherence to five central tenets: Shastra {scripture}, bhakti {devotion}, ahimsā {nonviolence, non-harming}, nāda {music}, and dhyana {meditation}. Animal rights, veganism, environmentalism, and social activism are also emphasized.

    Owner, Austin, explains:
“Incorporating chanting, meditation, pranayama, philosophy, and music into a vigorous flowing asana, or vinyasa, practice, Jivamukti is a physically and intellectually stimulating method. This system emphasizes bringing ancient teachings alive in a contemporary setting. Jivamukti Yoga is one of the most powerful and structured practices for one to experience yoga. It does not shy away from the spiritual aspects of the practice. In fact, yoga means ‘to yoke’ or ‘to unite’ – to know oneself as one with all that is. Yoga practices are a means to overcome avidya, the ignorance that distorts one’s perception of oneself and others. Using asana as a method to attain self-realization or enlightenment means exploring the true, practical, physical meaning of the term asana as ‘our relationship to the Earth’—that is, to other humans, animals, plants, things, the planet itself and all of manifestation. What could be more physical than what we eat, where we live and who we live with?”

    The Classes

Jivamukti has three core class types: the basic class, the spiritual warrior, and the open class. The basic class is usually part of a 4-week course that allows someone to learn the basics of yoga. The spiritual warrior class allows those who are short of time to practice within an hour. An open class comprises of a 90-minute session that encompasses the 5 core tenets of the Jivamukti practice. From learning more about ancient scripture {Shastra} to offering your intent of devotion {Bhakti}, the practice also focuses on practicing kindness to others and yourself {ahimsa}. We really love the focus on music {nada} and meditation (dhyana).

Offering over 60 classes a week, the Jivamukti Method also offers Aerial Yoga, Kundalini Yoga, and T’ia Chi. Monthly workshops focus on strengthening different aspects of your practice {inversion workshops are frequently held by popular demand}. Jivamukti’s focus on community also inspires different events and fundraisers held in and around the center.
