Have you ever found something so indulgently spectacular that you secretly don’t even want to share it with your friends so you can keep all the good treasures for yourself? {Yeah, no, neither have we… really.} Kanibal + Co. at 197 Montgomery St, Jersey City is totally a local boutique hidden gem, and we’re sharing this unique little shop with our fellow HG shopaholics, and maybe you’ll share the good find with your gal pals… after all, the season of giving is right around the corner.

For this local boutique spotlight, we’ll be ranking the boutique from 1-5 in the following categories: first impression, variety, ambiance, convenience, and authenticity. Then, there will be a final “get up and go” comprehensive overall score where 1 = nah, pass and 5 being MUST-GO ASAP… so let’s get to it.

Snap Fitness JC

First Impression: 5

The cutest storefront welcomes you. On our visit, the friendly shop girl told us all about the store’s 10-year history, which began online, eventually expanding into a brick-and-mortar shop {at the The Hair Room JC} and eventually ended up across the street in their current home for the past two years.

History aside, the store was warm and comforting — almost like walking into a friendly living room filled with knick-knacks. It’s hard to resist exploring.

Variety/Size: 5

You could honestly find something for everyone {male or female} and for every room {from living room to kitchen} that you’ll want to take home. We’re obsessed that they carry the spunky and fun ban.do product line as well as many beauty products also found at Anthropologie, such as Swedish Dream hand cream and Captain Blankenship hair products {hellooo dry shampoo}.

If “whimsical home goods and clever curiosities” {as the website states} has you a little nervous to check the price tag, you’ll be surprised to find adorable finds at reasonable prices — be sure to check out their mini-station near the register for branded Jersey City tees and mugs.

Ambiance: 5

Beyond the kind store attendee, the customers were even so kind. We don’t know if it was the big sunny windows, perfectly stacked red brick entrance, or the intimate, but not overwhelming, layout of the store… good vibes were abundant.

Convenience: 5

If you live in Hoboken, especially if you’re waaaay uptown, and potentially the farthest you can get from Jersey City, not to worry. You’ll find yourself on a picturesque tree-lined street only a four minute walk from Grove Street PATH station. Kanibal + Co. sits at an ideal location for a pleasant shopping experience: enough distance to keep from the bustle of Grove’s restaurant scene but close enough to not be a hassle.

Authenticity: 5

With the crazy amount of boutiques in the area, it’s really REALLY hard to find a place that differentiates itself amongst the competitors — but let us tell you: this is the place. Kanibal + Co. is the perfect fit for what this busy city needs: a calm oasis for a perfect shopping experience, with a variety brands and reasonable prices for everything, and everyone.

Final ‘Get Up & Go’ Score: 5

Ok, ok — we promise we don’t give every store a 5 in every category as we have here, but this place is just too cute. We told you it was a gem! This women-run and women-owned shop will give you butterflies as you support local creators and women business owners {and your shopping habits}.

PSA: Don’t forget to attend one of Kanibal + Co.’s monthly workshops {check the calendar on their website} featuring local Jersey City artists. If you missed the candle-making class a few weeks back, you can catch the upcoming glass etching session with Turnstyle ART {local Elementary art teacher and up-cycle artist} on September 14th.
