In Hoboken and Jersey City, we have our fair share of Italian restaurants — some good, some great, and some totally authentic. But when you find a spot that elevates the Italian food with the ambiance, you jump on it, and make yourself a regular. And that’s exactly what we did at Laico’s Restaurant in the Greenville neighborhood of Jersey City, a hidden gem off-the-beaten path, located at 67 Terhune Avenue. Not only does Laico’s serve up delicious food, but it also has a cozy, intimate vibe (and is inside a legit house). Read below for the dishes to order and the things that make Laico’s in Jersey City a must-visit for Italian food.

Location

When you pull up to Laico’s, you’ll almost think you’re at a house on a residential street — it’s easy to miss, minus the sign that hangs below the awning. Shockingly (but probably for good reason), they have valet parking for the dinner crowd, so you won’t have to worry about finding a spot on the uber-crowded Jersey City street.

History

Hobbs Inc

The restaurant/bar has been open since 1972 by Lou and Felice Laico, starting as a brick-oven pizzeria and bar for the locals. Since that time, it’s been run by three generations of the Laicos family who over time added a full menu dedicated to Italian specialties — gaining nods from local media.

Atmosphere

Inside the little Italian haven sits a bar to the right and a row of tables to the left. Walk even further back and you’ll find a room filled with a few more dinner tables — usually where private parties are situated — but it’s always the go-to spot if you can snag it, even for a party of two.

Food

Laico’s boasts a pretty extensive menu — with daily specials shared on their social channels, but must-order apps include eggplant rollatine, stuffed mushrooms, and possibly a brick-oven pizza for the table to share.

On the pasta front, they have every delectable Italian option under the sun, but faves are Farfalle Filetto di Pomodoro, ravioli, and Paglia e Fieno with shrimp and scallops in a vodka cream sauce.

As far as other entrees, it’s hard to go wrong as they serve everything from veal, steak, and seafood to chicken parm and chicken franchese — and all entree orders come with bread and their amazing house salad. Seriously, the dressing is that memorable.
