Being gluten free is not easy. It is a constant learning process and once you think you have it all  figured out, there is something else you learn you need to avoid. My latest discovery was cosmetic and skin care products. After spending several hours reading the ingredients in all the products I use on a daily basis, I learned that about 80% of my products contained some form of gluten or wheat extract in them. I researched gluten free cosmetic and skin care companies and wanted to share some of my favorites here. To read the comprehensive list of  gluten/wheat ingredients in products and additional companies, click here!

Red Apple Lipstick: Based out of Houston, Texas, this company is #1 for selling gluten free lipsticks. So far, I’ve tried their Mint 2 Be Minty Gluten Free Gloss; Twinkle Taupe E10 Eyeshadow; and Champagne Mineral Eye Shadow. The Mint 2 Be lipgloss is amazing – it not only smells delicious, but prevents chapped lips with a slight hint of color. Additionally, the company prides itself by ensuring that “[they] go through great measures to eliminate the chance for cross contamination and [their] products are professionally lab tested.”

Sun Tegrity: The owner of this company, Tricia,  began it after her mother passed away from skin cancer. She wanted to  promote the use of sunscreen, but eliminate toxic ingredients from its products. “It didn’t make sense to me to use these types of sunscreens to prevent skin cancer only to get another type of cancer.”  I am the ultimate sunscreen user. My dad is a survivor of melanoma skin cancer and my very pale skin makes me even more prone to burns.  My favorite product from Sun Tegrity is the 5-in-1 Natural Moisturizing Face Sunscreen.  It is a tinted sunscreen, that helps to make me look like I have some color while still protecting me in the sun!

Soapbox SoapsThis company was started by Dave Simnick, a classmate of mine at my alma mater, American University. Soapbox Soaps has taken off in the past two years and prides itself on not only using all-natural, simple ingredients, but with its mission to give back. For every bar purchased, the company donates a bar of soap, fresh water, or vitamin supplements to a child in need. My favorite is the Pomegranate Body & Soul Wash!

Neutrogena Naturals: I absolutely love this line. I have been loyal to Neutrogena since high school and have to say I was so happy to learn they came out with an all-natural line. The company also defines all those super long ingredients that no one ever knows what they mean (i.e. Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine = Coconut/Palm Kernel Derived). My favorite product so far is the multi-vitamin nourishing moisturizer.

Nourish Organics: This company manufactures its products in a dedicated gluten free facility to ensure that all the products are truly gluten free. They were the “first beauty company to ever work with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to create a collection of products so pure they could be certified organic under the same strict standards the government uses to certify food.” They sell lotions, body washes, deodorant, and much more. The organic body lotions are a life-saver in this brutal winter and smell absolutely amazing. My favorite is the Lavender Mint!
