I wish I dined at La Isla more often. Living uptown makes me stay in a small radius of Hoboken, which is not saying much since it is a mile square, but in the winter time it seems very far. Anyways, this small cuban restaurant in downtown Hoboken never fails to impress me. The restaurant has only a handful of tables with some more seats at the counter. If you are in no rush and want to eat a great meal, it is definitely worth the wait!

I had to start off my brunch with the Cafe No! fresh ground espresso coffee. I only drink black coffee and consider myself quite the coffee snob, and La Isla definitely knows how to make a great cup of cuban coffee!

For my meal, I ordered the Maduro, Spinach & Queso Blanco Omelette which is a sweet plantain, spinach and white cheese omelette served with home fries. My waiter checked with the chef and ensured that the omelette was gluten free as plantains can often be fried. These however, were completely fresh and melted perfectly with the cheese into the omelette. I have honestly never had such a tasty omelette, as they are generally a pretty standard dish, but the sweet plantains gave the omelettes a little something extra. The homefries were also gluten free. I am not sure what spices they use, but they were the right balance of flavors that I almost asked for more!

If you are looking for a little something more for brunch, lunch or dinner, the restaurant offers everything from cereals, salads, pressed sandwiches, desserts and even “batidos” or milk shakes.  I suggest heading to La Isla soon to try their food. They are open every day and are also a BYOB restaurant!

Ci vediamo. Mangia bene, Hoboken!
