The holidays are upon us which means an endless to-do list for shopping and decorating. It’s easy to lose sight of the fact that Hoboken in December is such a magical time. In addition to your own traditions at home, there are so many opportunities to carve out time to make special local memories with your families and friends. After all, the never-ending holiday tasks will still be there tomorrowOur Mile Square Mama reports in the best events and spots for spreading holiday cheer {for kids and adults alike}!

City Hall Holiday Crafts Fair: December 5 & 6 from 11a.m. to 5 p.m.

The annual craft fair is the perfect spot to support local artisans and find unique gifts like hand knits and organic honey products. The fair is a really fun place for kids to buy gifts for their siblings, teachers, grandparents, etc.—and even someone to wrap the presents for them! On the second floor, Mrs. Claus will greet visitors and offer face painting and the new Green Pear Cafe will also be selling coffee, tea, sweets & sandwiches.

Christmas Tree Lighting: December 8th at 5 p.m.

Kids and adults alike will enjoy Hoboken’s Christmas Tree Lighting. Enjoy the festive atmosphere, meet Elvis the Elf and, of course, a special appearance from Santa. Insider tip: You might consider carving out a territory across Washington to avoid the crowd. Kids will have a better view since they won’t have to look over adults standing in front of them; your husband can spot you easier on his commute home from the City; and you can run into Basile’s for a slice when your kids get antsy. There are quite a few musical performances from local schools, which are delightful but can get lengthy for younger children waiting for Santa.

Holiday Lights Spectacular at The Turtleback Zoo: Sundays, Fridays & Saturdays through 12/13

The Holiday Lights Spectacular at the Turtleback Zoo is the perfect activity for families when they want to explore beyond Hudson County. Located just 30 minutes from Hoboken, it’s easy to get to and is sure to make a lasting impression on kids. It’s not often that they get the chance to stroll through a zoo at nighttime and marvel at more than 50 winter and animal characters. The best part is that it’s FREE! But be sure to donate non-perishable food items, toys or gently used coats to help those in need.

Jubilee Center Breakfast with Santa: Saturday Dec 11th, seating at 9am and 11am

This is always a fun event, and the cost is only $10 per family (includes entrance for up to 4 persons under same household)—and it includes a pancake breakfast! You can skip the obligatory visit to the mall since Santa is always there to accept holiday wish lists and take pictures with all of the children. This year’s activities include sing-alongs and dancing by Funny Bonz Entertainment. Raffle Prizes will include gift certificates for fantastic classes at Creative Groove Studio and Kidville. Last minute gift shopping, featuring gift wrapped children’s books will be available, too. The breakfast will be held at the Jubilee Center at 601 Jackson Street. All proceeds and donations will go to the Jubilee Center, a safe haven for Hoboken’s children.

This event has SOLD OUT in year’s past so I recommend you buy your tickets EARLY!

Please go to jubileecenterhoboken.org for more information and to buy your tickets.

Hoboken Public Library Visit with Santa Claus: Wednesday, December 16 from 3:30 – 5 p.m.

The library will hold their annual visit from Kris Kringle on December 16! This event is so fun and it’s also free (get your ticket through Eventbrite).  Between 3:30-4 p.m. Santa will arrive, sing Jingle Bells and read ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas (this part of the afternoon is for children ages 3 1/2+).  From 4 to 5 p.m., children (infant+) can visit with Santa and parents can take their own photo.

Visit Santa at Newport Mall: Every day until 12/24; Hours vary – click here for more details

Trade in the ride to The Mall at Short Hills for a quick drive to our sister city, Jersey City. In previous years, I’ve visited in the evening mid-week and there has been zero waiting. Santa was LEGIT. And they typically allow you to use your own camera {with any purchase}.He’s located at the McDonald’s Entrance in Center Court.
