“Eat living foods. Live longer.” This is the message at More Life Cafe, a vegan restaurant in the West Side area of Jersey City {191 Mallory Avenue} where Marcell Portes hopes to encourage his liquor store-lined neighborhood to make healthier choices. Read on to learn more about this new vegan restaurant, the story behind it, and the menu courtesy of our Jersey City contributor, and go-to girl for all things vegan, Jen of Doody Free Girl:

The Story

Born in the Dominican Republic, Marcell Portes grew up in the inner city of Jersey City, where his mother owns a staple Dominican restaurant, El Sol Del Caribe. While he grew up around the kitchen {his uncle and cousin own restaurants too}, Marcell ate either McDonald’s or Chinese food every day after school as a child.

But in May of 2014, Marcell started transitioning to a vegan diet after making the connection between the migraines and stomach aches he was experiencing with the faux food he had been consuming. Fast forward to today and we have More Life Cafe, a vegan restaurant that is sure to please those who don’t eat animal products.

Location + Atmosphere

Hobbs Inc

More Life Cafe is located off-the-beaten-path on Mallory Avenue, so it lacks the hustle and bustle of downtown Jersey City {which is sometimes a great thing}. For when we can visit again, the interior definitely boasts a casual vibe, however, don’t let that underestimate the food they’re whipping up in the kitchen. Read on to see what the buffet-style menu is like.

The Food

There is something for everyone at More Life Cafe. Most of the food consists of less refined, plant-based items, but there is also plenty of vegan “junk food” — to introduce even the pickiest eaters to delicious vegan fare.

At the vegan self-serve buffet {for when we can visit in person again}, you will find at least two different mixed greens salads, potato salad, Waldorf salad, falafel, baked empanadas, mac + “cheese,” black beans, rice, sweet potato mash, and different stews.

There are daily specials, too, and menu items such as the popular BBQ Jackfruit Sliders and the Spicy Chick “N” Burger. The menu boasts plenty of juices, smoothies, shakes, and desserts, perfect if you have to grab something on the go.

More Life Cafe literally breathes more life into Jersey City by making healthy food accessible to everyone. Marcell shared with us, “I really believe the inner city youth are the most susceptible to deceptive advertising and social programming,” Marcell shared with us, noting that he is on a mission to make healthy food more accessible {including offering student specials}. Marcell hopes to spread the positivity of the vegan movement, fostering a culture of healthier and happier children in Jersey City.

More Life Cafe is currently open for delivery through UberEats and Grubhub.
