The Bergen-Lafayette neighborhood of Jersey City is about to welcome a few new additions to the food and drink realm. While The Roxy opened its doors in the Starling building on Monitor Street earlier this spring, the same area will soon see four more new restaurants — three of which are slated to open this summer as a part of The Bergen-Lafayette Collection. Read on for more about these new and incoming eateries in the Bergen-Lafayette section of Jersey City, NJ — from a breakfast cafe to a bubble tea shop, and more.

In May 2024, Bergen-Lafayette quietly welcomed The Roxy to the neighborhood — a new art deco-inspired restaurant and bar located within the Starling residential building at 66 Monitor Street. The new venture is from the same team behind Corto in Jersey City Heights. The Roxy has a full bar, and some of the standout dishes on the menu include the Mizuna Salad (shiso, shallot, sesame, ponzu, + parmesan), the scallops, and other seafood-focused main dishes alongside other options like filet of duck and cavatelli.

A new doughnut and bubble tea shop will also debut in the Starling building this summer. Mochi Dough/Bober Tea will serve up premium Japanese rice flour doughnuts, called mochi dough, as well as bubble tea. Some of the doughnut flavors on the menu include taro, black sesame, and funnel cake. The website says that Mochi Dough/Bober Tea is coming soon, and a press release from The Bergen-Lafayette Collection revealed that the new shop will open at 66 Monitor Street this August. Mochi Dough has other locations in California, Colorado, Indiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, South Carolina, and Washington State — this will be its first New Jersey outpost.

Down the road at 89 Monitor Street, The Hazel residential building will also welcome a Southern-style eatery this fall. Cheeky’s Sandwiches is a new sandwich shop serving up New Orleans-style eats — including chicken sandwiches, chicken, biscuits, + gravy sandwiches, and other dishes. Cheeky’s is also on track to open a storefront in NYC at the Essex Street Market soon.

Around the corner at the Atlas residential building, Eggs Up will also debut this August. While we do not know much about Eggs Up just yet, the new breakfast cafe will be situated at 270 Johnston Street.

“We are excited to welcome these new eateries to The Bergen-Lafayette Collection,” William Rosato, Managing Partner of Alpine Residential, said in a press release. “They are important additions to a neighborhood that’s experienced significant growth over the past few years and become a hotbed of residential activity and new community services.”

The Bergen-Lafayette Collection is a group of five mixed-use properties in Jersey City that will include around 1,000 residential apartment units as well as several retail spots. The project is a collaboration with local developers Alpine Residential, Fields Grade, and South Oxford Management.

Separate from The Bergen-Lafayette collection, a new venture from the team behind GTK in Hoboken and Jersey City will open up in the neighborhood at 58 Maple Street inside the 295J Apartments. While there is no timeline on the opening just yet, a source close to the project shared with HG that Andrew Martino, founder and operator of GTK, “is working on a new model that will help satisfy the neighborhood’s need for family-friendly dining, event space, and great takeout all-in-one space, in partnership with Southeast-based legacy BBQ brand Sticky Fingers Ribhouse”. GTK currently has locations at 356 Varick Street in Jersey City and opened up a Hoboken outpost in June 2023 at 1014 Washington Street.
