About the New Congestion Pricing Plan

On Monday, November 18th, 2024 the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s board voted to officially implement a $9 congestion pricing fee for all non-commercial vehicles to enter Manhattan south of 60th Street starting on January 5th, 2025 after the plan was indefinitely halted this summer, per NJ.com. New York Governor Kathy Hochul claims that the toll would be enough to raise $15 billion for the MTA as thousands of commuters begin to opt for a public transit commute instead of driving to avoid additional fees. Included in the plan is an immediate increase to a number of outer-borough bus routes, as well as discounts after 9PM. Drivers who earn less than $50,000 per year will also receive a 50 percent discount on every toll after the 10th toll each month.

Parkway + Turnpike Toll Hikes

In addition to the $9 congestion pricing, NJ Turnpike Authority officials will also be rolling out another 3% toll increase starting on January 1st, 2025. The increase will affect drivers on both the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway. The New Jersey Turnpike increase will equate to an additional 16 cents per day — which for most commuters, could be close to an additional $80 expense every year. The Garden State Parkway tolls across its various locations will also increase by 3%. Future increases can also be expected as the state’s process called “indexing” which allows tolls to automatically increase each year.
