Hoboken’s Own Yellow Brick Road Getting Historic Renovation

Few residents know that if you follow the Yellow Brick Road in Hoboken, it leads to Elysian Park. Castle Point Terrace, which stretches from 8th Street to Elysian Park, is just that — Hoboken’s own Yellow Brick relic. The yellow brick path, located on the side street by Stevens Institute of Technology, dates back over a century. Now, it’s getting a makeover.

“Makeover,” though, may be the wrong word. The City of Hoboken is moving forward with a historical renovation project called the Castle Point Terrace Historic Rehabilitation Project. It seeks to improve the road’s current “poor condition,” by serving “complete reconstruction.”

New Business Coming to Former Makeovers Spot

Is a new salon coming taking over the former Makeovers spot on Washington Street? The windows have been blacked out with paper and a new signage suggests “IM Beauty Salon” is coming to the location soon. More to come as the story develops!

Chef Tan Coming to Newport in Jersey City

Downtown Jersey City is gearing up to welcome Chef Tan to Washington Boulevard. The Asian restaurant is slated to move into the 558 Washington Boulevard location, AKA the former Confucius Asian Bistro. CAB closed last year though there have been rumors it might come back.

Chef Tan is an Asian-influenced restaurant that also has another location in Highland Park. Their menu includes Sichuan and Hunan style dishes, both authentic Chinese food styles not served anywhere else in Jersey City. For those looking for more Americanized Chinese food, one particular section of the Chef Tan menu is dubbed just that.

An investigation is currently underway after an incident of gun violence left a Jersey City police car struck by bullets. Last Sunday, a Jersey City Police Department vehicle was hit by a bullet near Ocean Avenue and Wilkinson Avenue around 8pm. “The passenger door of a police vehicle was struck by gun shots,” JC Spokesperson Ashley Manz revealed.

The incident occurred nearly 40 minutes after JC police responded to a “shots fired” call.

Hoboken Votes to Reinstate Runoffs for Elections

hoboken-2018-elections-runoffs

According to the Hudson County Clerk’s Office, 74% of Hoboken voters picked ‘yes’ on the ballot question about runoffs. Over 14,607 ballots were cast. Runoffs mean candidates for mayor and council will not be elected unless they receive a majority of votes (over 50%).

Hoboken voters previously eliminated runoff elections in 2012 with over 50% of the votes in favor of eliminating such a system, but recent Council actions have led to the ballot question appearing in next week’s elections. This past February, the City Council voted to add a referendum to this year’s ballot that will seek voter approval to reinstate runoff elections. At the time, the council also voted unanimously in support of instant runoffs, which is a system that allows voters to rank candidates in the voting booth in real-time.

The HUB’s Landlords Prevail in Eviction Case

The HUB has officially been evicted from its space downtown. “Mario Fini and Dian Fini are pleased to have prevailed in the eviction of HUB, which failed to honor its lease obligations,” a statement on their website read. Mario and Dian even included pictures of the HUB’s eviction notice. “We are glad HUB will never open again,” she stated.

The Hudson Place nightclub was shut down indefinitely after videos of lewd sex acts at the bar were shared online. The ABC Board originally filed 15 charges against the liquor license holder before tacking on an additional 20 charges that stemmed back as far as January 2016.

“We look forward to finding a new tenant who will contribute positively to the Hoboken community in this beautiful space located directly across the street from the Hoboken PATH, NJ Transit trains, ferries, and Light Rail,” the Finis added.

Hoboken Woman Pleads Guilty to Her Role in Voter Fraud Scheme

vote-hoboken-2018

Earlier this week, a Hoboken woman admitted her role in a conspiracy to promote a voter bribery scheme. Lizaida Camis, 55, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Court Judge William J. Martini in Newark Federal Court. Camis was charged with Count 2 of an indictment of conspiracy to use mail to promote a voter bribery scheme during the 2013 municipal election.

Camis, among others, were instructed at the direction of former Hoboken City Council candidate Frank Raia, to pay Hoboken voters $50 if the voters then applied for mail-in ballots, then cast mail-in ballots for the November 2013 election. After the mail-ins were received, Camis {and others} visited the voters’ residences, and instructed them to vote for a rent control referendum, the same one Raia supported.

Bank records show that voters who interacted with Camis and Braxton received $50 checks from an entity associated with Raia. The conspiracy charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Sentencing is scheduled for February 21, 2019.
