Mayor Bhalla Signs Executive Order for Parental Leave

Hoboken City workers will now earn their “full” salary while on parental leave, thanks to Mayor Ravinder Bhalla signing an executive order for expanded paid parental leave. The order ensures that while New Jersey Family Leave Insurance pays for up to two-thirds of a person’s salary, the city of Hoboken will make up the difference, therefore letting employees receive their full salaries while on parental leave.

“This is a common-sense policy,” Bhalla said in a statement. “A family’s expenses go up after having a child, so helping our employees maintain their income level while caring for a baby is good for the child, good for our employees, and good for the community.

Jersey City Public Schools to Get a Boost from Payroll Tax

With Jersey City’s public school system underfunded and in need of help, state Senator Sandra B. Cunningham has proposed a payroll tax that might offer a boost.

The proposal suggests a 1-percent payroll tax on JC businesses. That accrued revenue would then go toward the school district, which has about 29,000 enrolled students. The tax is modeled after a successful one in Newark that has brought in $48 million to the public school system annually.

Jersey City’s underfunded public-school system could see a major boost under a plan devised by state Sen. Sandra B. Cunningham.

Stalled Construction Delayed Even Further After Puccini’s Is Put Up for Sale

Jersey City’s Marion section was supposed to see a major new development but after construction plans never came to fruition, the Puccini property has now been put on the market for $50 million.

It was supposed to be the site of Avenior, a mixed-use complex to be built at 1072 and 1075 West Side Avenue in JC. It called for 486 units, 384 parking spaces, and over 25K square feet of retail space. The site was approved by the Jersey City Planning Board in 2016 but construction never began and the site is now for sale.
