It’s safe to say that holistic healing and alternative therapies to many past “let-me-just-go-to-the-doctor-and-get-meds” thoughts are slowly becoming thing of the past, especially with so many fantastic healers and acupuncturists coming to the area. That’s where Ani Baran, owner and acupuncturist at NJ Acupuncture Center in Jersey City and Bayonne comes into play.

Born in the country of Armenia, Ani learned at a young age about the holistic ways of healing. ” I was raised in a very natural way: you drink mint tea when you feel nauseous, you take lemon with honey when you’re not feeling well [rather than taking medication].” She was able to take that knowledge with her to the US, and went on to complete her undergraduate studies at Fordham University in Biological Sciences, knowing that she wanted a career in healthcare. But as she got deeper into the medical sector during her studies, she realized its shortcomings. “I felt disenchanted with all the medications, their side effects, and the over-prescribing of them. So I started looking for natural ways of healing.” She notes that she across articles about acupuncture as an alternative therapy for helping with infertility. “The more I read, the more I became hooked,” she recalled. Baran took her science credits and transferred into acupuncture school.

Fast-forward several years, and Ani graduated from the Eastern School of Acupuncture and Traditional Medicine, with a one-year an internship in the urology department at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center — and went on to open up her acupuncture practice in two locations in Hudson County in June os 2016. NJ Acupuncture Center’s two locations are at 550 Newark Avenue (Suite 201) as well as 777 Avenue C in Bayonne, with Ani splitting her time between the two locations. “I started my practices in Bayonne and Jersey City, which are about 20 minutes apart,” said Baran. “I began to explain to people in the neighborhoods how acupuncture could help them and why it’s so important as a therapy.”

In a typical session, she’ll ask you questions about your lifestyle, bowel movements [it’s going to come up], and sleep. She’ll look at your tongue, your feet, and everything in between {truust, she asked all that and more during our session — so don’t be shy!}. “I want to know everything about them because it’s all connected within the body — there’s not one thing that’s isolated. Acupuncture works with the immunological response in the body. If you put a foreign object within the body, it stimulates the white blood cells, so depending on the strategic placement, it brings white blood cells to an area to help.”

A lot of conditions are related and so people get surprised when I am treating them for constipation but their sleep gets better.

At our session, Ani began by showing me the needles {which are surgical-grade stainless steel needles — aka super thin, flexible, and soft}. Even if you’re a scaredy-cat when it comes to being pricked with something sharp, you will barely feel these; I happen to haaate needles, and barely felt anything [such is usually the case with acupuncture]. We discussed the current issues I was experiencing: sinus headaches/cold, TMJ, and of course, stress. And then Ani got to work.

^Ignore the insane roots on my balayge/ombré — this pic is just to show you the needles. Pain-free!

She focused mainly on points around my sinuses and head, in addition to some points in my hands that {of course} are interconnected to all of the other things going on in my body. When we were finished, I felt like my sinuses were clearly out, and I felt calmer and more centered. Win/Win. All in all, the appointment took about 45 minutes from start-to-finish.

“When people come to acupuncture, they already have a diagnosis, so they’re not relying on you to tell them what’s wrong,” Ani explained. “I take that and I translate it into Chinese medicine terms—what I see, how this person presenting themselves, how they are talking, how they smell [yes, that actually is a factor!]—I take that all in and treat accordingly.”

Some of the ailments and issues that Ani treats include:

  • Acid Reflux
  • Addiction
  • Allergies
  • Anxiety
  • Arthritis
  • Asthma
  • Autoimmune Disorders
  • Back and Neck Pain
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Chronic Fatigue

Ya know, just a few. But really, the reasons why people seek acupuncture treatment are endless. “Bodybuilders come in for acupuncture usually for repetitive strain on the same muscles — more popular than you might think.” In addressing all-too-common fertility issues in our area, Ani noted, “A lot of women are having children later in life, and so they are using acupuncture as a primary or supplementary therapy to regulate their menstrual cycles.” She explained that most people living with their conditions think that what they’re experiencing is normal — that they’re going to suffer with migraines twice a month or they’re going to have aches and pains — but it’s not. “They can get treatment, with no side effects and eliminate those symptoms. It doesn’t have to be and shouldn’t be somebody’s norm. That’s the message I want to get out.”

As far as pricing, Ani accepts all major insurance, but even if your insurance doesn’t cover it — she aims to be affordable and offers a discount if you mention this article. At the Jersey City location, there are two floors of free parking where you’ve got a guaranteed spot {street parking can be a little tricky to find}. The medical building is a large building that houses many offices, but head into the elevator to the second floor, and you’ll find a yellow-walled waiting room. From there, you can either call Ani or she’ll come get you at your appointment time.

And just because we love you/want you to get started on your healing, NJ Acupuncture is offering HG readers a special deal:
