Don’t let the brightly-colored metal chairs and industrial modern vibes fool you: Pizza Masters Jersey City is an old-school pizza joint at heart. Located on 278 Central Ave, they’ve been a long time Jersey City Heights favorite since they opened their doors in 1959. By 1963, the Demarchi family took over with Anthony “Richie” Demarchi running the show to this day with help of his sons Mark and Lorenzo. Here, we’re sharing a peek inside Pizza Masters’ pizza spot in Jersey City Heights, who touts one of the keys to their success as their ability to stay true to their roots while continuing to evolve with the diverse Heights neighborhood.

Their business motto according to Richie?

“Quality, Service, and Price. In that order. If you don’t have quality, you have nothing.”

Part of that evolution is a major face lift that finished up in September. Pizza Masters Jersey City acquired the space next door to create a bigger dining area with more light and updated décor while style keeping the old school vibe. We stopped in to check out the space, and of course, for a slice of pizza.

Location

Pizza Masters Jersey City has a simple store front nestled between a drug store and Kennedy Department store on Central Avenue. They also have a second entrance on Summit, which has a small parking lot — and leads into Renato’s Fine Italian Dining. This is the more formal sister of Pizza Masters Jersey City, where you can expect to find classic Italian antipasti, pastas, and entrees as well as their famous pizza.

If you continue to the back of the restaurant, you’ll find a pizza parlor filled with reclaimed wooden bistro tables, gas-lamp style sconces, and bright metal chairs. With ample seating and easy access from the street, this is the perfect place to bring the kids or large groups for a quick bite.

Speaking of bites, we went with the chicken bruschetta, eggplant with pesto and tomatoes, and roasted garlic with fresh tomatoes, which were all delish. For all of you vegetarians out there, Pizza Masters Jersey City has a few options to choose from including a white pie, vegetable combo, margherita, eggplant, and vodka with fresh mozzarella. At only $6.50 for a 12″ pizza and $11.50 for 16″ pizza, you can’t really go wrong!

We couldn’t forget to mention the selection of strombolis and rolls {like the mac and cheese one we tried…and it was oh-so-gooood}. Pizza Masters Jersey City also offers more traditional Italian fare — expect to find apps such as mozzarella sticks and garlic knots along with a variety of soups and salads.

If you aren’t feeling pizza, Pizza Masters Jersey City has hot sandwiches, cold sandwiches, and focaccia/wraps. They also serve up classic Italian entrees such as pasta with vodka sauce, lasagna, chicken Marsala, and fried jumbo shrimp. Pro tip: Pizza Masters Jersey City also has a full bar and yummy desserts such as toasted almond crème cake and cannolis that you must try.

If the Heights feels like a trek, you have other options: Café Bello Ristorante and their second Pizza Masters in Bayonne, NJ are sister pizza spots. From a resident perspective, it’s lovely to see that not only has Pizza Masters Jersey City evolved with the Jersey City Heights neighborhood, it’s been an integral part of keeping the community alive. They’ve sponsored little league teams, they’ve been involved with church functions at St Nicholas, St. Anne’s, and St. Joseph’s, and given back to organizations such as The Dante Alighieri Society and Police Benevolent Association. As active member of the community that gives back and serves up a quality slice, you can count us in.
