Sad day in Jersey City Heights — Pizza Vita has closed {but has several other locations to enjoy, FYI}. Reports of the sign coming down on Palisade Avenue tipped us off, and the owners confirmed it on April 16th. Pizza Vita’s Neapolitan-style pizza can still be found at Pier 13, the new District Kitchen at Harborside. An official update from the owners:

“Effective Monday April 15, 2019 our Pizza Vita operations in Jersey City will be located only at 210 Hudson St as well as the Lutze Biergarten. We have sold the 435 Palisade location to a fantastic restauranteur that will open a new concept in that space shortly. They will be a great fit for the Heights and we wish them well.

Thank you to our patrons and friends that supported us there. We hope you will continue to come see us at any of our 3 local locations- Pier 13 Hoboken, 210 Hudson St Jersey City- District Kitchen, 3 2nd Street- Lutze Biergarten.”

Last year, we had a chance to chat with the owners at the Jersey City location and of course, sample some of their unreal pizzas. Here’s what you’re missing {but can get in their Summit/Harborside/trucks}:

Ernesto Santorelli, one of the owners of Pizza Vita you probably recognize from his food truck on Pier 13

Hobbs Inc

Founded in 2011, Chef Adele DiBiase and Ernesto Santorelli designed Pizza Vita to be a contemporary pizzeria and cucina inspired by the traditional pizzerias of Naples, Italy. Chef Adele is an award-winning chef and restaurateur who has made appearances on NBC’s Today Show and Food Network’s Chopped. Ernesto Santorelli has 25 years in the hospitality and entertainment business as well as unique culinary pursuits — making them the ultimate foodie team. The duo traveled to Italy to learn the true art of Neapolitan pizza and dough, making from some of Italy’s master pizzaiolos, and that is where the seed for Pizza Vita Summit was truly born.

Now you may be wondering how the idea for a mobile wood-fired food-truck came into play: While making pizzas out of a trailer during an event in California, Santorelli was inspired to build the urban version of a mobile wood-fired pizza truck. As Santorelli puts it, “Where have you ever seen a truck pull up with a 4,000-pound, Italian-made, wood-fired pizza oven and make true Neapolitan pizza for you in 60 to 90 seconds?

Pizza Vita specializes in Neopolitan pizza — which is best characterized as pizza prepared with simple and fresh ingredients {think dough, raw tomatoes, fresh mozzarella cheese, fresh basil, and olive oil — no fancy toppings necessary} and a thin, chewy crust with bubbles that are slightly charred in the best possible way. Pies are placed in the 900-degree oven for a mere 90 seconds, and then voila — ready! The oven at the Jersey City pizza shop is not the same as the wood-fired oven in their trucks, but will achieve an even bake, which the chef says customers will definitely enjoy. Plus, for guests who love al fresco dining, Pizza Vita has a backyard area.

Though the classic pie is by far the fan favorite, specialty pies with red, white, or vodka sauces and toppings such as kale, eggplant, and truffle oil are available for those seeking a more contemporary take on the Neapolitan classic. Pizza not your thing? The menu also features pasta dishes, fresh salads, and homemade gelato. And for those craving a libation of sorts, Pizza Vita is BYOB.

As if Pizza Vita hasn’t raised the pizza-game enough, Chef Adele and Santorelli have incorporated dietary restrictions and sustainability into their business model. The ovens used at both the Summit and Jersey City locations both utilize green energy and are among the only two ovens using such technology in the state. Chef Adele has also devised vegan-friendly recipes, using vegan cheese {dairy-free friends, get excited — there’s vegan pizza} she makes at Vita Organic with natural and organic ingredients. Pasta options include whole wheat, gluten-free, or artichoke pasta varieties.
